Like.
Love would've meant a Superman movie that would've had the writing and execution of the Nolan Bat films to go along with the action.
I think the reason people didn't like the controversial aspect of the movie is that they didn't build up to it. It just kinda came out of nowhere with seemingly no regard for the character's long established history. I don't mind breaking the rules as long as when you do it you do it right: build up to it and make it a powerful moment, which IMO, this wasn't.
It's a shame that they haven't been able to muster an A+ Superman film since 1980, arguably 1978. There were definitely moments throughout MOS that I thought they were going to equal STM or SII, but they didn't. The action and visuals were good, but they forgot to beef up the substance.
What we ended up with was superficial eye candy.
I also thought Amy Adams was just kinda there. Her involvement also seemed fairly trivial. Certainly I've been less than thrilled with her as a choice strictly from a superficial standpoint, since I don't find her attractive. However, I *was* expecting her acting chops to come through for the character in the same way Margot Kidder wasn't the hottest chick, but nailed the character acting-wise. Didn't happen here IMO. Though she wasn't given a lot to work with in terms of the script, she also didn't really stand out IMO.
Cavill was excellent. Best Superman since Reeve (and I *do* like Cain, Welling and Routh in varying degrees). I did enjoy Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner, (despite his inexplicably stupid end). Laurence Fishburne was good in his rather limited role. And Michael Shannon was great.

The word-of-mouth, to me, is average to above average, but not the "OMG!!!! You have to see The Dark Knight NOW!" kinda deal. Unfortunately, it's just not THAT good of a movie. I haven't seen it a second time, but I'm already having trouble remembering scenes.
I am surprised about WWZ's boxoffice since there didn't seem to be much buzz about it, but then they've been HEAVILY advertising it for months, so I don't know.
I enjoyed MoS, it was good, but they didn't nail it. A lot of the movie should've resonated more than it did.

Yeah, I personally don't know anyone yet that has disliked it.
Literally EVERYONE I've talked to---no exaggeration---everyone has given me that casual "I liked it." response.

Everyone---EVERYONE---I've talked to has said the same thing:
"I liked it."
Not "Aw, man, that was awesome!"
Just, "I liked it." In that same noncommittal, overly casual tone with furrowed eyebrows and a slightly perplexed look of surprise. And they finish "I liked it." on a cliffhanger. Almost like there's a "but" that never comes out.
As if they should've loved it, but were surprised they merely liked it.
What are you guys hearing?

Eh, who gives a poop bout Mark Waid.
Birthright was boring as poop and Man of Steel wasn't.

Faora is also ridiculously hot. I can't stop looking at her whenever she appears. SOOOOOOO much hotter than Adams.

I'm not completely sold on Nolan bias.
I mean, his Bat films are superior to MoS in every way.

It's the one I grew up with (along with 1984 commercials). SII extended works just as well.

I still haven't seen the Kirk Alyn serials even though I've owned them on DVD for some time. I also had a few of them taped from cable from the 80s. I never got around to seeing those either.

Enrique, yup. Like you said, we've been talking about Superman for 14 years yet you just drop your review that gives away the ending in the non-spoiler thread. There are a LOT of people on here that haven't seen MOS at all and don't know what happens and don't want to see any spoilers at all on this thread. Please respect them. Just because you want your review read by more people by posting it here doesn't mean it should be here. Uhhh, it had NOTHING to do with being read by more people. I thought this was the "main" Man of Steel page that everyone would default to once the movie came out. I thought the spoiler thread was for discussing spoilers pre-release. Maybe the thread should be renamed Man of Steel Review Thread? What's the MoS page for anyway if not to discuss the movie? Or is it just to do this: "Aw, man, I hope the movie is going to be good!" "Aw, man, met too." "Yeah, me three!" "I got my tickets on Fandora!"

There were times throughout the film where I thought it was a frackig AWESOME movie, but by the end, I thought, "Hmm, it was good." Not great, just plain, sold "good".
Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner were both fantastic.
Michael Shannon was great. The writers humanized Zod, and Shannon did great.
I was unimpressed with Amy Adams. I don't feel they showed enough of her to shine her acting ability, meaning she was just an average looking chick. Margot Kidder wasn't the hottest chick, but her acting and chemistry with Reeve superseded all that. Not so with Adams.
Henry Cavill: BEST Superman since Reeve. Really, really good. I hope he becomes a movie star outside of Superman. Loved his performance. Blows away Routh's version.
Didnt like Superman snapping Zod's neck. I can not put my finger on why, but I didn't like it. I think it's because it didnt seem to have the weight it should have, but again, I'm not 100% sure on why my gut reaction was that I didn't like it. I think it's because Superman isn't a killer and they didn't do a good enough job building up that to make it impactful.
Music: I can't remember a SINGLE piece of music. In all fairness, his music for BB grew on me with repeat viewings so I'm going to be openminded at this point and assume it was good?
I can understand the criticisms on the lack of character development. Action scenes were good and it's EXACTLY what Superman Retunrs needed.
I realize that I can never EVER compare a new Superman movie to the Reeve films. Too legendary. Shogun can travel with Superman III the Donner version from a different dimension and it would probably still be disappointing.
All in all: good movie.
