No, it's real. He was supposed to have a more traditional looking costume at the beginning and when he comes back, then he gets that "Electro Man" suit.

WOW!!! I would love to see the meeting where they decided rape the innards of the character. I imagine something like this: Hollywood exec 1-"hey lets do a superman movie and give it to tim burton, he's made for hollywood hits!" Tim Burton- " yes but my take will fundamentally change everything about the character" Hollywood exec 2- "where'd you come from?" Tim Burton- "I was lurking within the floor boards, but that is irrelevant. We should take everything iconic about the character, and ill eat it. Itll funnel through my dark mind and freaky hair do, and i will digest it. What i shit out will be the next superman movie" Hollywood exec 1- "what do you have in mind" Tim Burton- "well, Johnny depp will star in every roll other than superman. And yes I am including lois lane" Hollywood exec 2-"YEAH..." Tim Burton-"Next, of course, we take all of the color out, like i do in every movie. Red? Blue? American colors? Iconicity? Pish Posh. Im tim burton, therefore, this will be a success no matter how badly i shit on the creative talent that came before me. His suit will be black, silver and the Emblem will in no way resemble the iconic look. Hollywood exec 1- "YEAH!!!" Random sane person-"WTF?!?!??!?!??!?!" Tim Burton- "Then we'll make the guy, who's supposed to be INCREDIBLY handsome, look freakishly odd to externalize his hidden anguish.... who's hideous enough to pull that off? NICHOLAS CAGE WILL PLAY SUPERMAN!" Hollywood exec 1- "He'd single handedly completely shit on this film... keep going with ideas on how to fist fuck superman some more" Tim Burton- "Well, his body will not be in any kind of shape... it'll just be the suit. Oh and the suit will glow up like a plasma lamp!" Hollywood exec 2- "wow, you really are made for hollywood!" Hollywood exec 1- "you have any ideas about a hulk movie?" Tim Burton-"off the top of my head... I'd make hulk fight a hulked out poodle" you forgot the score by danny elfman.

Read the Dan Gilroy script which was likely what these designs were for.
Holy shit, is it a turd. We're talking close to Batman And Robin levels of bad.

My god I hate Tim Burton. Two overrated superhero movies and he thought he could piss on a legend.

Burton is my candidate for most overrated director.

Burton is my candidate for most overrated director. Burton is the kind of guy who makes better movies when there's not a big budget. His early movies were quirky and fun. I, for one, love his Batman movies, but I think I'm in the minority on this board. He's only made one thoroughly enjoyable movie in the past decade. (Big Fish)

I ADORE Batman 89.
And there are parts & aspects of Batman Returns that make it watchable for me about every 3 or 4 years or so.
I like alot of Burton's work. But he is overexposed & lends himself to jokes like:
Have you heard about the new Tim Burton movie?
No! What is it!?!?
It's kinda gothic & whimsical & it has his wife in it. Also, it stars Johnny Depp with a pale face & quirky demeanor.
But.....isn't that........

I stopped caring about Tim Burton after Mars Attacks. Though Sweeney Todd was pretty good.

VERY disappointed with:
Batman 89 (Batman 2 only worked cos of the atmosphere and music IMO - look deeper and you won't see a great deal (like TDK))
Sweeny Todd (saw it cinema; most retards complained cos it was a musical, I was under-whelmed by the whole thing)
The shit with the headless horseman made in 99 with Depp
Alice in Wonderland this year.
Edward Scissorhands
Charlie and choc factory
Enjoyed:
Big Fish: A great film; I am surprised something so great came from an ordinary book
Ed Wood: although 90% of it was not true to Wood's life
Beetlejuice: Its been nearly 20 years since I've seen it

Don't forget Planet of The Apes. The most horrible remake in the history of Hollywood. The only parts I enjoyed were the cameos by Michael Jackson and Prince. ;D You know what I'm talking about...
That was a stinky, steaming, pile of horse poo.

Apes was awful.
I think his masterpiece is Ed Wood, personally. I love that movie to pieces.

I agree with most of this, the Batman movies I look on more favorably now that there's a 'real' Batman origin movie with BB & TDK. One things for sure with the Burton Batman films.... can't say that Burton sold out, one could definitely feel that he loved the material, even if (imo) he didn't totally have the correct handle for it. (Although parts of Batman Returns is GREAT with the Catwoman/Batman bits)
When he goes astray, it seems to be when he seems to be doing things more for the paycheck - and going against what he's a good fit for.
Examples at his worst: Planet of the Apes (took an edgy classic and made it BLAND. Oy.), that headless horseman adaptation he did with Depp (Burton doesn't like 'true' horror, again, bland), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the tone was too sarcastic for a kids film. Art design is great, but the original was far far better)-
When he's left to roam, at the very least it's INTERESTING. If he made a wacked-out Superman film---- at this point, I would have prefered to see it at least come out from a pure curiosity standpoint- so long as a 'real' one came along later that could be embraced (which it did in SR, but then some rejected it because of its adult tone, but that's another story).... versus Burton trying to be something he's not.
If Burton tried to do a 'correct' Superman film, it probably would have been another 'Planet of the Apes'. Boring and bland.
If Burton did a psychedelic 'whatever he does' alternative bizzaro version, I think it would have been interesting in a 'Smallville' way. It's not exactly Superman, but it would have beat a movie vacuum of nothing for another 10-15 years of WB debating in circles over what the next right move was.
I don't mind alternative versions of things I love, as long as the 'solid version' comes out in my lifetime to enjoy*.
Burton let free is interesting, at the least. (Most of the time) Restrained Burton is something that's not satisfying on any level.
((*Having said that though- In hindsight, I guess the worst thing that could have happened is that if Burton's Frankenstein approach to Superman became a box office success- it would have opened the door to more Frankenstein approaches to superhero adaptations. Ok, I guess there's that....*shudder*))

I love Burton. I love most of his movies. He's only made one REALLY bad movie, in my eyes, and that's Apes, everything else is at least pretty decent to me.
I was even very interested to see what he'd do with Superman. I probably wouldn't like it but it sure as shit would be interesting.
These pictures convince me otherwise. The movie would be interesting to the point of mental collapse. Jesus CHRIST. What the fuck?

Well- even if it was the worst movie in the world- agreed....it would be something 'out of the box'- and (so long as it wasn't a giant success by non-Superman folk) it wouldn't really change the 'limbo' status that Supes ended up at WB for years after anyways.
The costumes do look strange, but I have to admit that when I first saw the Xmen leather, I had doubts, too, until I saw how it looked on film.
If it was called anything but "Superman" that film might actually be something to like.

It seemed rethinking Superman was what everyone was doing in the late 90's. Even the comics where trying new things...

I love that movie to pieces. agreed. excellent movie, and apes blows, it doesnt even try to make sense. an aside, have you guys ever felt that ALL of burton's movies could all take place in the same universe? burton's gotham city, in the suburbs of that live edward scissorhands and beetlejuice, across the pond lives (...lives?) the corpse bride, in the future the apes take over....

It seemed rethinking Superman was what everyone was doing in the late 90's. Even the comics where trying new things... y'know, its the spider-clone-saga that kept this from being the worst comic storyline EVER i actually thought it was interesting because i never thought it was going to actually last. the mistake DC made was billing it as a permanent change ahead of the storyline- but at the time the writing SUUUUCCCKKKKED and was "event-driven" with this being the latest "event". if you look at the JLA and "superman:annual" stories from that period, superman is actually pretty cool electric-blue. this is because JLA and th eannuals were NOT serialised and were not done by the then super-team. but the DC exacerbated the problem by taking a hostile stance with fans, and even tried to make it analagous to other storylines where superman had an altered appearance. then they made it worse by splitting him into 2, inexplicably. then they made it worse by returning him to normal inexplicably. as WIZARD comics pointed out, the only thing worse than a shitty storyline is no-storyline.

That photo of Cage in the suit has been confirmed as a fake by Steve Johnston. The only suit ever created was the "light up" one.
I knew it!

you know, if they HAD made this- it would have been a cult-classic BAD movie icon. so bad its underground. kitschy.
it would have been critically torpedoed, fans would have burnt WB ot the ground, tim burton would run for the hills, jonpeters would hav eoffed himself .... and thats why i wish it would have happened.
if that movie had happened, then everyon would BEG for a guy like singer to do something like superman returns. " ...can't we just go back to what we like..? can't we do a movie that feels like a chirstopher reeve superman...? "
