I think there will probably be ONE "down to earth" moment like that, where he's being nice to a kid or something. I didn't think so, until that clip at the end of this trailer, and now I'm totally sold on Cavill's "humanity" with the character, which Reeve AND Routh both nailed.
But I get the feeling that most of this movie, rightly so, will be about him defending us from shit we just can't possibly be prepared for. And that's how it should be.
But I swear to god, he'd better not stop a single fucking bank robbery, mugging, a real estate swindle...whatever. NONE of that.

I can be forthright with you lot -
EVERY time I do something concientiously "nice" for a stranger I completely ape reeve and routh. Its not that I'm "phoney" - its that....well ferris beullar taught me how to navigate high school. Penthouse rescued me from my niavite' about women (to a degree). But reeve (and routh) showed me how to articulate kindness in a way that seems warm if a little nerdy. To be honest- I love kids and animals- but I have only so much energy, and sooooo much on my plate. I just can't BE 100% "nice" all day every day. Sometimes I just need to withdraw a bit.
But you know that scene in superman returns - where kitty sets him up but he doesn't know and he's taken her to hosptiol? He says: "...ididnt do anything"
THAT. The tone. The inflection. The demeanor. That way of making someone feel completely at ease. Its a beauty. I try to emulate that.
I probably sound retarded right now.

You sound retarded for thinking you sound retarded. Of COURSE we can relate. I can, at least. Every time I help a lady up or down the subway stairs with her stroller, I think of Superman and Chris Reeve. Every time I stop and do something that everyone else is walking past, I think of Superman and Chris Reeve. It's a choice, to do good, and when you think of Chris Reeve, it's difficult not to.

I'm not sure I like the Geonosis-Krypton stuff yet, which is killing me, because I want to love all of it. I just read that it's Jor-El riding the giant dragonfly...

Why introduce crap from the Star Wars prequels into Krypton? I just don't get it. So Kryptonians have this incredible space travel capability, but they need to ride dragonflies? WTF? ?

My girlfriend, who doesn't really like Superman, and hates any sci-fi or fantasy movies, described the trailer as poetic and wants to come to the midnight screening with me if there is one!

A Superman movie, just because of the name and character, cannot hope to reach $3 billion Avatar levels. The audience is far more limited although I'm sure this film will convert many previous non believers and anti Superman, pro Batman fans. It will make $1 billion worldwide but I just don't think any Superman film can go much beyond that. Avengers was the first movie, light, colourful, fun and exciting. If Man of Steel can come close to or beat Avengers, then it really will have made its mark and will make Superman more popular than he's ever been before!

I quite like the look of Krypton but it did take me by surprise at first. The only thing I'm not sure about is the Dragonfly!!

You just brought me down a few levels. Dragonflies? Awww, fuck. "May I ask why a jedi knight dragonfly is all the way out here on Geonosis Krypton?"

So a planet that has advanced technology cannot have indigenous life froms other than humaniods?
Ok. Once kryptonians invent the rocket- all their domestic animals go extinct.
Gotcha.
Fuck sake. WE live in a world with planes and rockets and space shuttles- no one rides horses? Ok. Go and look at the source. Especially the silver age comics- krypton was said to have all manor ovf weird animals. Look at superman the animated series! The house of EL can't have a pet?
God - can you imagine a krypton more outlandish? How about a krypton with no animals at all- and in the absence of animal skins or cotton they all wear aluminum foil and build computers out of crystals that grow in water or something

Not to mention the kind of medieval vibe I've been getting off some of the House of El stuff.
PERSONALLY, I still would like to see a full-blown, Flash Gordon style super-science sleek Krypton, like it was envisioned in the thirties and forties. But y'know what? I'm perfectly happy getting the first live-action interpretation of Krypton EVER that isn't: a) a direct pull from STM (which is what we got on Superboy, Lois & Clark, Smallville, and SR)
or
b) A mish-mash of leftovers from earlier movie serials (the Superman serials and the Adventures of Superman TV show...in one of those, Tom Tyler's Captain Marvel costume is CLEARLY being worn by one of the Council of Elders)

It has been brought to my attention that I may need to clarify my earlier comments. (Comments made entirely sober albiet somewhat fatigued- and written in plain english- read top to bottom left to right, wrods form sentences and aspirin for headaches).
My point is that I don't believe that "relatable" or "realistic" is at all plausible with ANY superhero. I actually admire pretty much all heroes. It bugs me that any superhero movie gets made dumb. Look at green hornet- how many of you give a shit about green hornet? I do. Its agreat character. I'm annoyed at it being a shitty movie. So if I compare superman to spider man or iron man it is NOT a "hate" on those other characters. I adore those characters. I was a kid watching the cheesy spider man tv series in the 70s, and collecting iron man comics well before 2008.
My point being is that "alien god" heroes, whether superman, thor, silver surfer or otherwise are no less "relatable" than a batman or a tony stark or a whatever. They ALL have completely outlandish elements, and completely human elements.
The difference with a distinction is personal character. Superman (and captains marvel and america) are ridiculed - made fun of, fans impuned, we're not as slick or kewl as some other character always called more "relatable" because of unapologetic "flaws". I don't find radioactive spiders any more "realisitc" the batmans utility belt or humanoid aliens. What I do take uhmbridge at are petulant fanboys diserespecting the most important superhero of all. I, for one, find good character always fashionable.
Who would you rather be friends with? Clark kent or guy gardner? Who would you like your daughter to date? Steve rogers or tony stark? Who can you trust with your kids? Billy batson or spawn?
I hope that's clear. Thank you for your time.

He does have a point though.
It's another world, the idea that there can't be any different forms of wildlife is riduclous, and those dragonfly things DID crop up in some of the comics. I can't remember what they called them but they were there so it's not as if they've plucked it out of thin air.

I wonder if Reeve would have looked good in the MoS suit.
It looks incredible on Cavill.
