Looking at the TV spot...if that's Kent's reaction to seeing something terrible happen to his dad, then his death may just hit some of us hard emotionally.

That IS a good tv spot. Man, what was Clark reacting to? That close up of Superman just before he flys to earth, that was cool.

That TV spot is fucking KILLER. I had a feeling that was going to be the scene where Jonathan dies. It's probably his first big rescue but he doesn't save his pop. Interesting that they threw in a Christ pose. More previous imagery reused. I'm totally fine with it, though. I love that Supes has to rear back a little to fly. I always kinda liked that in the Flash TV show, how he kinda leans back and then just takes off. It sure is nice to see Crowe giving it apparently his all. His eyes are saying a lot in the few seconds we see them. Acting is all in the eyes, and you can tell when an actor is bored, and Crowe is very clearly not bored in this one. Think from what we've seen so far he's impressed me most. When he's really switched on he's easily one of the best actors in the world.

To be honest, I can't recall Crowe ever phoning it in...even in his worst movies, he's always the most interesting thing.

That poster is horrible. He looks like he's drunk and about to throw up. Of all the regal images of him they could have chosen.

Strange that they have chosen to take screenshots from the film (was it shot digitally?) rather than use any promo or special shoot pics for the posters so far.
The concept of the poster is fine, but I agree, he just doesn't look right in the face for a still photo.

Lets face it the days of an excellent movie poster has long since vanished. No style at all.

MAN OF STEEL > MAN OF IRON

Just got back from the Iron Man Marathon (1,2, Avengers in 3D and finally the new movie).....
Man of Steel HAS to be better than that crapfest that three was. I'm too tired to type a whole heck of a lot tonight about it but....HOLY....lots of Starks' typical one liner comments/comedy but not much of him in the suit really. I'm not gonna spoil the ending but....WTF?! It just really doesn't make sense that there's more story left in the IM franchise, seriously. I'll commit suicide if MOS doesn't whoop IM's ass financially.

It's more than a little bit disappointing.... it's sad that it's somewhat of a rarity nowadays if it's a great poster--- even if for a giant summer movie. Snyder's Watchmen had some pretty good posters. With all the amazing imagery from the trailer, I'm disappointed that the one chosen is so weak. Pity. Went to see Iron Man 3, and some of the posters in the lobby were actually pretty good and not the norm (Pepper Potts holding a cracked Iron Man helmet; the Mandarin sitting down with cool shades and an Iron Man helmet on the ground; Iron Man/Tony Stark burning and falling from the sky). Though.... I have to say in the history of Superman movie posters & dvd covers, I've only liked maybe three of them- The S shield through the clouds; the teaser poster for SII; the Lois/Clark full body floating above the DP building. Better Superman movie posters I've seen since actually have been fan made. Why is it so hard for studios to have great movie posters if fans can do better ones? Oh well.... so long as the movie is great, all is forgiven, but.... it is a bit of a disappointment.

MAN OF STEEL may end up being a much better film than Iron Man 3, but it may not be as fun or entertaining... "commercially speaking!".
The mass appeal of Avengers and Iron Man will help Iron Man 3 break a billion dollars without a sweat.
Man of Steel really needs to try hard to win back its audience and attract any new Superman fans - a billion dollars is possible - and if it really is as good as we all think it may be, then it may just end up beating all those Marvel films, including Avengers!

A billion dollars, Man of Steel?
Somebody has to be an optimist.

it won't get near Iron Man commercially.
IM has already built up a huge fan base, it's had the Avengers too. MOS is a first installment, so I'd be stunned if it got anywhere near IM3

When exactly did Superman become "uncool" and "unpopular"?
It really is a mystery. All my childhood, I remember everyone loving the Superman movies.
When did it all change?

When exactly did Superman become "uncool" and "unpopular"? It really is a mystery. All my childhood, I remember everyone loving the Superman movies. When did it all change? The 90's, looking back Batman 89 is a "dark" film compared to some more recent films. But what defined a hero and comic book character was changed because of it. Superman was left to the wayside, nobody knew what to do with the boy scout, nobody understood that "boy scout" doesn't have to equal "cheese". Superman wasn't cool anymore, because he didn't have the edge that other characters have. The onslaught of Marvel characters on film certainly added to the lessening of Superman's popularity. Comics to film wise, there is so many other options for the younger generation than there was in 1978, or even the 1980's. When The Death of Superman came out, the character did have a resurgence in popularity, but soon after that again faded and looking back most fans consider it more a gimmick to sell comics than a legit classic storyline. But if done properly, would have made a heck of a movie! WB's development heck of the characters film franchise for over 20 years didn't help things either. So IMO it's not so much that Superman wasn't cool, he just wasn't being sold properly. The goal with a character like Superman (who is set in particular values) shouldn't be to change him for changes sake, it should be to evolve him and his world to reflect what's going on. Superman can still stand for truth, justice and the american way without seeming like he is stuck in 1950's american culture.

I think the advantage IM3 has now is that Joe Public know it is part of an ongoing set of adventures and its leading on to something else.
There is no indication that MOS will follow the same path. I will say this though, social networking definitely gives it an edge over SR in the marketing department. I won't say Nolan helps because Singer was hot property back in the day.
Another edge is that, to quote my wife "the new Superman is hot!". Women are already under his spell whereas most at the time were commenting that Routh was so like Reeve...so the conversation is different.
I do have to say...whoever designs posters for WB really needs sacking.

Hopefully Cavill does get extra bums on seats. There's a whole campaign with girls wanting him cast as Christian Grey, god forbid he fucks his career up by taking that, but yeah he's getting a heck of a lot of female attention so hopefully that get's them hooked too.
Superman definitely needs to change in someways. The boy scout, bright colours all good thing is just too cheesy for the modern generation, sad but that's the way it is. If they can mix it up a bit and get a new generation on board that would be brilliant.
As for the poster, it's just so lazy, they took a screen shot and actually altered his eyes to make it appear as if he's looking at you, and it looks shit ;D
Movie posters and Album cover art are a disgrace compared with what they used to be.

I think it REALLY depends on the age group. I have nieces and nephews in this ipad generation that are 8-10, and they have no problem with the bright colors, 's' curl, and prefer the light hearted joyous humor.
On the other hand, I have older ones that feel as if the character was like believing in Santa Claus- and prefer the darker superheroes and the ones with teen angst/ etc. etc.
I know that the movies want to appeal to both groups (maybe the latter one moreso)- but I think it really is a delicate balance on what to change and what to keep the same with Supes. If Supes changes too much, it becomes 'Smalliville' again...
Hopefully MOS gets the balance right (or at least enough).....

Lots of women, in my experience, tend to like these sorts of things, heck, most sorts of things, for their aesthetic value. What there is to look at.
Ask pretty much ANY woman out there who her favorite actor is. It'll be someone REALLY good looking. Ask her why he is her favorite actor. She will say it's because he's REALLY good looking. Not because he's incredibly talented or makes amazing movies.
They don't see shit for the depth of the plot or dialogue and the subject matter, they notice the fucking drapes on the wall in the background or the bracelet that some chick walking by is wearing. Sure, there are the normal women out there who like and watch things for their legitimate value, but for the most part, I think a lot of chicks just like stuff that's shiny and pretty.
So, in that regard, it makes sense that chicks are starting to like all these nerdy things, because it's becoming more inclusive. "Look! We have REALLY good looking dudes in these roles now! Look at their muscles! They're huge, right? We will show them as often as possible so that you won't have to think too much or complain to your boyfriend how weird you think the movie really is!"
Furthermore, if all I said is even slightly true and not 100% sexist, MOS will do gangbusters because it has a lot going for it in the shiny and pretty arena. Crowe, Costner, Cavill, those are three dudes that women are going to swoon over when they see this.

Yeah, they're Bonding it: men want to be him; women want him.
It's working out great for Daniel Craig.
