Fair point. Can remember when Costner was popular with women.
Can remember practically every girl swooning over Maximus in 2000.

Oh, he's ridiculously good looking. That interview scene with Amy Adams, the little half smile he gives, Christ...
Last mancrush I had was Matty McConaughey. I can't really stand him anymore. Before that was Clooney for a while. I kinda can't stand him anymore, either, honestly.
I think the first dude I tried to kinda emulate and really looked up to was Dean Cain. I was thirteen, a nerd, glasses, and along came this guy playing a character who's a nerd with glasses but made him CHARMING. That was insane to me but I started modeling myself after that when I was in middle school and high school. Never brought about anything until college when all that Cain training really fucking paid off.
Anyway. I've said entirely too much on the topic of mancrushes.

yea, Cavill is a good looking chap alright. The film is pretty much advertising itself really, especially with social media as mentioned before. It's about winning over the non believers I think, get them in and if they enjoy, they'll come back for a sequel too.

Going back a bit...
Actually, going back to the 1960's- (one can view the Singer-produced documentary, too on this-)....
When the world changed from being somewhat innocent in the '50's to the 60's- Superman comics went from being fantasy to shifting to being darker and more 'relevant' - and Superman (as he was initially) arguably changed in tone because he was wasn't getting the blockbuster sales and/or wasn't as cool.
I agree w/cypher85 that we didn't get ultra-dark, ultra-violent tones of superhero comics didn't start happening until, yeah... Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen.
But- I think it's still a mix of the age one reads certain comics/experiences movies and how much the ones who hold the creative reins to the character can adapt the character to a certain time to make Superman 'cool' and 'popular' to all ages.
Also- Batman's concept is flexible enough to work strongly in both comedic (Brave and the Bold is an excellent example) and hard-edged (Dark Knight) mediums.
Superman's concept I think has always been tougher to pull off effectively.
Batman's strongest comics seem to be the ones that go closest to 'realism'-
Superman's strongest comics seem to play the best when it's 'big' and includes giant elements of his whole fantastic background- away from the 'real' world. [Which is why I thought Stracynski's 'Grounded' Superman comics were a bit misguided from the get-go]
(*One of the things that bugged me so much about Smallville's approach- they were so concerned about making things 'realistic' for the longest time, that it took away from some of the fun a better fantasy show might have had)

Jim Lee "It's an amazing movie. I have seen it."
"It's epic, it's got a lot of heart. One of the things I was missing from the last Superman movie I think was the action and this movie has it in spades. It is a visual thrillride, it is amazing. You get to see all the powers of Superman in all it's glory and I think people are going to be blown away."

I'd love to hear from someone who isn't employed by Warner Brothers.

It's probably best for us to think like that, rather than think, "OH MY GOD, DID YOU HEAR WHAT JIM LEE SAID??"

I know his comments don't carry much weight but thought I'd post it anyway.
As excited as I am to see the film I'm still quite apprehensive. I've only seen two Snyder films (300 and Dawn of the Dead) and I enjoyed the both. But seeing other people pan his films on here is making me apprehensive ;D

I have never enjoyed a Snyder film. To be fair, I haven't seen Dawn of the Dead, which I've heard is his best work and quite good.
But yeah, go look earlier in this thread to see my opinion of his work. But other than his name on that trailer, none of this looks like everything of his I've come to dislike. I'm really not worried. It doesn't look like he's made it all about HIM (which is my biggest complaint with his work), and instead, it's just a big Superman movie.

I'm still nervous it'll suck as a film, but hope it's all for nothing.
I know he doesn't have a great rep as a director so it's hard to be anything other than nervous. But fuck it, he didn't write the film so that's a huge plus.

As much as I rag on Snyder, he's an amazing visualist.... moreso than Burton, who I think gets too much credit at times.
There are great sequences and bits to Watchmen, and it's very admirable for its ambitions (after all, it languished for years)- but the main irritation is that the underlying drama of the story (which should have been a tearjerker) was botched so badly.
I still watch it occassionally for some of the nicer parts, and he definitely knows how to make great eye candy. I'd definitely reccomend viewing Watchmen to any comics fan.....with reservations and conditions ahead of time....

Very true CAM. His visuals are spectacular so MOS should definitely have that going for it. But like you say I think many people worry he can't get the story to flow properly.
I love everything I've seen from MOS so far, it looks beautiful, it looks like it's got heart. But I've still got a big fear of getting really excited about it only to be left disappointed, but thats probably knowing that films like Sucker Punch sucked ass.
I've got a friend who really likes Watchmen, I saw a little bit of it and it doesn't really look like my thing.
Fingers crossed this is the film to rescue Snyder's reputation.

I hear ya, Kristopher. Same here...
I've seen "300", "Watchmen" (all cuts), and "Sucker Punch" (director's extended cut), and have only seen part of "Dawn of the Dead', which some people feel is his best.
With the ones I've seen- they've ALL looked fantastic. And- they've all had some VERY good actors in ALL of them... and all of them have had substantial budgets.
Given that- I'd think there'd be little/no excuse to have good performances.... unless the director or editor just didn't know how to bring the best out of them.
As 'blah' as Brett Ratner's movies have been, I have to give him credit for having good (or at least good enough) performances in them.
If it was down to a choice of Ratner or Snyder directing Superman, I hate to admit that I'd probably prefer Snyder. (( Better a spectacular failure with memorable moments that burn in your memory than a mediocre movie that might just slightly pass the bar. ))

Yeah CAM totally agree with you. They all look great, and I thought the Dawn of the Dead remake was excellent, and I generally HATE horror remakes. Part of me is hoping Nolan wouldn't get involved with this if he wasn't sure it was going to be good. Anyway, I love the new banner

I'm not worried anymore. Its going to be fine. 6 months ago the drumbeat was "only as good as iron ma 2 will be good enough".
The visuals, the "action"... not even a concern. At this point the only thing that gives me pause is costner- I know "that scene" has us hooked- but he's the only dodgy element I haven't been totally at ease with. Looks good though.
At this point id actually like to see SOME slo-mo. Just a bit. Otherwise I don't care. My focus now is what is NOT in the movie. Looking back at the trailers and interviews I can confidently say 2 thing will NOT happen at any time.
1) superman will never have a proper haircut. Seriously. I love cavill. Once it was clear routh was out I lobbied for him and jon hamm. A LOT of anxiety over MOS was the shit casting rumors- "oh I love facebook- get armie hammer!". (Vomits) But no. I adore cavill and love the suit for fcuk sake give him a decent haircut. I can understand farm-boy clark looking wind-whipped but even as superman its ...sheesh.. "hey the ghost of ronald reagan says you need to put a little relaxer in it, have a jelly bean".
2) stop worrying and learn to love the snyder.
Guess what. At NO time whatsoever did snyder or nolan or goyer EVER say "hey- let's have lois lane fuck general zod - and then zod has a sex tape to use for leverage". If I need to explain that I apologise for interupting the coke~snort you were after on kevin "you'll buy anything" feygays cock.
As you were.

So my family and I went to Iron Man 3 tonight. The movie was good, but seeing the MOS trailer was worth the price of admission alone! I've watched it a bunch of times on my computer , tv etc, but this was like seeing it again for the first time. The big screen and sound, actually seeing Superman's face when he emerges from the Fortress.....wow. The best part was the crowd. Normally people are talking, on their phone etc, doing all sorts of annoying things during the trailers. But tonight there was none of that. It seemed everyone was engaged. When it started I could hear whispers of "It's Superman!". Other than that, nothing. Once it was over, after the S left the screen, I could hear lots of people saying "looks good" "gotta see that" etc. Awesome. It is a fun time being a Superman fan. I am not used to having a new Superman movie coming out. I don't want to get invoved in the SR debate. I will say I loved the teaser, but looking back it was more to do with Brando and the Krypton theme. The things I saw about what SR would be besides the links to Donner left me worried. I hoped it would be good, but I was a little dissapointed. So far, I have had nothing but good feelings about MOS. It is almost like SR was necessary to move forward with something new, a new direction. Anyway, can't wait!!

At this point id actually like to see SOME slo-mo. Just a bit. Bite that tongue hard, dude. Be careful of what you wish for. And what's the deal between my movie theater not showing the trailer behind Iron Man 3. I was looking forward to the trailer as much as watching Iron Man 3 and they didn't show it. I was pissed!
