Well...if this were the opening to Man of Steel 2 and the first one blew us out of our seats, then people would be lining up these promotions. Did anyone really expect a lot of people to be showing up to this stuff? Come on.

Um... how does the size of the audience/crowd affect the enjoyment of the movie?
If the movie is good, I would be just as happy to watch it alone as the only person in the theatre.

Haha I told my mate Star Trek: Nemesis was the best trek since Khan and he went alone. Only man in the show theatre. Was hilarious.
I think they should have done a STM and SII marathon before MOS.

Plenty of people on twitter saying there were big queues for tickets so it must be dependent on the town you live in.
Does the Walmart thing really bother people anyway? It's a brand new film, and unless you actually work there and get a poor review for not doing your job, who really cares!

never really thought about that! I think it's safe to say he isn't called Superman until the end of the film anyway. In that little behind the scenes doc and in the other clips the text always has Cavill as playing Clark Kent/Kal-El as opposed to Clark Kent/Superman. Did you screencap that yourself good sir? Clark Kent/Kal-El

its all anecdotal. as long as the audio/video dept has the trailer in rotation on all those tvs for sale its going to be a lot of exposure.
read on a blog somewhere how some fans were impatient with walmart getting merchandise and toys and such and the dumbass employees. one guy says "if you go into walmart and ask the staff anything about their stock, you obviously have never been to walmart" ;D ours is one of the worst. you know how they ave those monitors in every section running adverts? you can literally be standing in frozen foods and see an ad for shrimp cocktail- you turn and ask the guy where the shrimp cocktail is and he'll look at you like you asked him to write a report on string theory. but marie went to walmart the next town over and they were loaded with superman posters and merch.
as another anecdote- i was at the local hardees (owned by a guy i know who owns a slew of franchise restaurants) and was kvetching that they didnt have the MOS promos up. it led to a conversation with the gal about superman in general. well, the cute little teenyboppers in the back come up and ask if we're talking superman- yes - and how they saw the trailer and it looked awesome. this was BEFORE IM3 so its not like they only saw it because they were there to see something else. that kids are getting into is cool.

There was a business article that came up a couple of months ago talking about customers leaving Walmart in general and going to more expensive supermarkets because of lack of customer service, plus that Walmart was making more cutbacks to their employee hours.... Not a good sign about customer service if this was an actual article from a business magazine and not a rant or a blog.
Anyhow- I agree.... if it was MOS 2, perhaps there might be more folks lining up. In a summer full of superheroes, MOS might be considered just another one of many...

Judging by the hugely disappointing opening weekend number of Star Trek Into Darkness, how do you think this affects the outcome and number for Man of Steel??
It seems the majority of ST viewers were over 25 (and it didn't attract many teens), whereas kids and adults went out in droves to see Iron Man 3 and The Great Gatsby.
Let's hope the marketing for MOS does connect with younger viewers and that they don't all want to see After Earth and avoid this new Superman film.
Back to STID, a $70 million opening weekend is really a disaster to Paramount. Even positive reviews and good word of mouth won't help it surpass the gross of the previous Trek as there are too many other big films coming out soon... i.e. Fast & Furious 6 and Hangover 3

Personally i think Superman is more appealing to teenagers than Star Trek

I was suprised to hear this (even though I was disappointed by the film, too)- I thought it would have at least matched the original for ST 2009....
Years ago, I remember an article on the net saying Hollywood estimated that Trek films brought in a consistent core audience, but getting other folks who weren't Trek fans to jump in was always a difficult challenge.
A surface guess for IM 3's big success could well be people seeing it as Avengers 2 (more or less) rather than as a follow up to IM 2.
Trek 2's failure, though..... If it was a few weeks in, maybe the word of mouth might bring it down- but for a first weekend? Odd... I dunno...

Star Trek probably doesn't have the appeal beyond its huge fanbase. All the girls in my screening were checking their phones. They didn't want to be there. 70 mil is a good opening for a Trek movie - it's not a disaster by any means. 164 mil worldwide is very good so far. The domestic market is shrinking anyway, Europe, Asia, those are the markets that producers are aiming at to save their asses.
Superman will do just fine. Broad appeal.

I don't want to sidetrack the thread too far, but ST was dubbed "the Bourne Supremacy" version of Star Trek... which I think was fair, as the characters' development was pretty far into the background with the 'chase' being the forefront and center of the whole pic. Trek IV I oddly was the highest (I believe) grossing one of the Treks- but that also focused way more on the 'family' aspects of the series- with the comedy being organic to the story (and not forced like in Trek V).
Trek Into Darkness I felt struggled to figure out what it was going to be--- bent more towards what fans wanted, or what they felt would broaden their base.
With Superman- I don't know if it needs a romance at its core or not (Like STM/SII and SR had) or if mass audiences want giant spectacle that can come with a Superman movie.
Watchmen had giant spectacle- but despite a pretty good cast, mixed performance, but you just didn't care about the relationships from how Snyder directed them.
Still a little cautious.... crossing my fingers that Snyder gets enough right.... (despite preparing to projectile vomit when/if the words "Jenny Olsen" come on screen)

Stuff like Watchmen don't have that broad appeal. Everyone knows Superman and Batman. If MOS is great, word of mouth will do it justice, no pun intended, at the box office. Everyone is excited by this movie. The trailers have been terrific -- lots of emotional stuff and very dramatic. That Costner moment sold the movie.

That moment in the trailer "You ARE my son" gets to me everytime. Just as Alec Guinness anchored the entire original Star Wars: A New Hope movie, maybe Crowe and Costner will have the same function in MOS.
The question is: How long will Costner stick around in MOS? I'm oddly ok either way if Pa Kent dies early on or if he gets killed in a conflict with the Kryptonians, if all else falls into place properly- so long as his death isn't THE motivation for Supes to becomes Supes and fight evil (a la Batman).

It's just RIDICULOUS how much Cavill looks like Superman.
Not like Reeve.
Like SUPERMAN.
