First, because the set is too damn expensive. $90 for 2-3 good movies and a bunch of crap is too much. On top of that, early reviews stated that Amazon was handing out UK versions in the US. Amazon temporarily pulled the set, and then it came back....still UK versions. The overwhelming majority on Marketplace is the UK version too. People buy the cheaper UK version and then sell it in US for a profit. I can't trust any sellers. I'll have to see it with my own eyes before buying. Ya know, I was about to start considering buying the set on amazon now that the brand new prices are in the 60 dollar range, but after reading this, as well as the other reviews on the page complaining about the same problem, I think I'll wait a little longer. Hopefully the Best Buy price goes down for the holidays. They're still selling the set for over 100 dollars. Eh, maybe I'll wait until the discs are sold individually.

So I returned the UK set back to Amazon. Got my refund of 83.99.
I went over to Fry's Electronics to buy it in person. I figured I'd pay $10-15 more, just as long as I could guarantee what I was buying. Pulling up, I noticed they had a huge sign outside which said "WE MATCH INTERNET PRICES".
So I go in, and find that the store price is $95.99. I go to the counter, and they price-match it to Amazon's price, which just happens to be the LOWEST third-party price, and so I walk out the door with a US copy of the Superman set for $68.06. ;D ;D ;D ;D
I feel like I just shoplifted. ;D
If you don't own this yet and have a Fry's Electronics near you, DO IT.

Mine does that too. I think it's encoded that way on the disc, so there's probably nothing you can do about it. It looks to me like the clips with the comic book scans have been converted from one frame-rate to another or rendered with the wrong field order or something like that. Highly annoying.
I bought the UK version of this set (on purpose, from Amazon.co.uk) and the SD content actually is not PAL. It plays fine on my US Panasonic Blu-Ray player. The discs not being labeled is sort of an annoyance though, especially with Superman I and II. When I started to watch the theatrical version of STM I put in the disc I assumed was it, but it was the extended version disc instead. Other than that and the different slipcase, the UK set is identical to the US one. I couldn't justify paying the higher US price just for the fancier slipcover, which is why I got the UK version.

I gotta see if I have one of those around here on Brooklyn NY. Then again, there's a lot of American chains that aren't here for some reason. Denny's, Big Boy, Hooter's (though there's one in Manhattan), Checkers, Walmart, just to name a few.

Gotta say, so far I'm pretty impressed by this.
For one, it's not BD-Live, meaning you can stop and resume like a DVD. Odd for a 2011 release, but very welcome. Second, there is no disclaimer/trailer junk. Warner logo -> menu -> movie, just like that. Warner is usually pretty good about leaving that junk off. Bogged down crap like that makes me miss the simplicity of DVDs (or even VHS). Disney is among the worst, though they make up for that with stellar video/audio on their releases.
But what's with the de-evolution of Superman movie menus? The original DVD had a nice animated menu. Then the DVD box set had a still image with music playing. Finally, the Blu-rays have still images with no sound. What next, blank screen with nothing but "Play Movie" written in Times New Roman? ;D

I MUCH prefer it that way. Menus with music seems like a DVD gimmick. If I wanted to listen to the music, I'd stick the film on. Having the music start over when you get to the root menu made it so repetitive.

Yeah, I thought about that, too--- The thing most irritating about the still image to me is the idea of the still menu image burning into your screen if you forget to turn the tv off (or doze off when watching tv late at night). ;p
And...... the de-evolution is a turnoff. I'd be wiling to pay an extra buck or so for a nice animated menu.

Doesn't the film play automatic if you leave the menu on long enough?

Some menus are cool but I don't want to wait three fucking minutes to be able to press play because some elaborate animation is showing.

ummmm...Russ? Is there more to that gif? Is it, perhaps something feature length? Just asking out of, y'know, professional curiosity.

I've noticed some Hollywood movies do, others don't. Depends how the dvd makers have it set up.

Because I'm a fucking loser, I popped in STM theatrical and SR blu rays the other day after having gotten new contacts and glasses. My old prescription was just that, old, and pretty off from what I needed.
Man, these movies look fantastic. I know SR wasn't redone but nevertheless, WB did a great job on these. I still wish we could get STM theatrical's original mix in 5.1, can't be that hard, but ah well.

I think this weekend I'm going to sit down and watch all of the Fleischer cartoons all in one sitting. There are still a few of the famous studio toons that I haven't seen yet.

Just finished STM theatical. I've read some reviews knocking the picture quality of STM. It looks pretty good though. Due to Unsworth's film style and use of filters, this wouldn't be an incredibly sharp movie. After seeing it for years, I'm used to the soft picture. Film grain is quite nice and well-resolved.
It's reportedly the worst looking of the 4, so 2-4 should look incredible.

STM bluray quality makes you feel like you're watching a 35mm movie. Good level of grain and detail. It doesn't look digital.

All well and good if you want the UK release. The set is only 25 GBP, and people buy them, and resell them in US for profit.

Amazon was out of stock on this set for a while and was selling another seller's inventory. This is why a lot of people who ordered through Amazon at one point received the UK versions. But Amazon has now started selling the set again themselves and so people will be getting the North American versions when they order.
