Why did it take WB 19 fucking years to make a new Superman film?
Oh actually, don't remind me.

I dunno if this has anything to with the announcement but this was taken from USA Today: for more go here: www.usatoday.com/life/comics/2011-05-31-dc-comics-reinvents_n.htm This is the pic that was posted.. Superman's costume is different, no red underwear, neck collar.. I wonder if this is what we might be getting for the movie or how DC's Superman is going to look, if the rights are indeed split up.

Changing Supes costume for the sake of it? Fail.
I think you are right, if this is a total redo then the movie costume will resemble it.
All the talk recently about Batman being rebooted after TDKR is probably linked it to.
JLA movie in the next few years? I can see it.

How many times have they retold Superman's origin in the past ten years?

"Lee spearheaded the costumes' redesign to make characters more identifiable and accessible to comic fans new and old."
Other than a few tweaks, I don't see any major changes from the small picture. I have noticed that Lee sure loves his high neck collars. It's like the cast from TNG, without the rank pips. Good thing there are no fat superheroes. Fat guys with no neck can't pull off the high collar.

They all have those collars, looks like sh1t.
You can bet your life Cavill will resemble the modern DC Superman, no getting around it. Never have we seen a major shift away from the traditional costume on the screen, so it's time. And I'm also now betting it'll be CG going by how impressive the Lantern images are, they'll justify it with the alien/technology angle.
I reckon first pic will be a drawing like the first Capt America publicity image.

Yuck. Rather than a neck collar, why not cover the entire neck like a scuba suit. Either way it looks horrible
It comes off like a very fashion-conscious Supes wanting to make a statement: "Look, I wanna be modern with no neckline & red underpants on the outside so no one can make fun of me" Supes should never be about that. Him being the champion of truth, justice & all that stuff should take precedence over being fashion-conscious.
The more comfortable he is in his own skin & confidence he exudes, the more people focus on that. The more self-conscious he is & tells people (non-verbally) to not make fun of his look, the more people will. They wouldn't be doing that had DC not directed their attention to it in the first place.

Great post. Funny thing is, these statements I feel also apply to what I didn't like about Smallville not having the Superman costume, too....
Anyhow--- Why call it Superman if you want to bury the symbolism in the costume and the memory of what's been around for decades?
Bah. Humbug.

Frank's art is exceptional, but the Guy can't draw a natural smile without the character looking like a freak. I love his art, but any time someone smiles they look like a freaky victim of Joker Toxin.

This smells of Marvel's Heroes Reborn back in the mid 90s. Of which Jim Lee was also a part of.

;D ;D ;D
If mentioning a couple of the flaws, I'd also say, in an ideal world, I'd have Dan Jurgens or George Perez do his layouts as well. His illustration is fantastic, but the expressions are a bit quirky and don't necessarily show off the most dynamic angles at times (something that Perez and Jurgens do really well).

God I love Jurgen's work. He reeks of 90's style but I can't get enough. Him and Breeding were one of the all time great teams. At least he is back on Booster, and him and Rapund consistently do an outstanding job.

Jurgens is solid, if underrated. DC did a really smart choice in getting Jurgens for the "Death of Superman" imo. He knew how to 'frame' all the classic moments.
But- beyond that, he just knows how to tell a story incredibly well on a comic page. (Something not all the good illustrators can necessarily do.)

Jurgens is my favorite comic book artist of all time. Odd choice, I know, but he is not showy. He knows how to draw any situation and make it look realistic if that's even possible in a comic book about Superman. He actually DREW overweight people. Not just muscular, hugely fat or skinny like every other artist seems limited to do. He made things look real. That's why I love him the most. With Brett Breeding especially.
His earlier stuff with Art Thibert inking, though, is awesome. More fantastical but still awesome.

Jurgens is not a bad choice at all- Jim Lee (and the like) may have some great 'poster images' that I'll give him, but his style oftentimes override the storytelling.
Jurgens also has those moments where his panels could make great posters, but with Lee's comic book style, you almost feel like everything drawn ONLY to get to the point to show off those 'splasy moments'--- whereas with Jurgens, every panel feels equally committed to, because the story is what's most important to him.
And--- illustration-wise, Jurgens/Thibert was amazing, I agree.

I don't know what it is but I really like the way Jurgen's draws faces. The structure is spot on for my sensibilities. And I just like his writing. It can be quite cheesy at times, especially for booster, but I love it. I dropped booster for the 10 issues or so that he wasn't on the book. But now beginning with flashpoint he is back on and so am I

The problem I think with DC (and Marvel's guilty, too) is that they're constantly trying to think short-term, as if they can get 'get' readers right now, rather than thinking long-term longevity of things, with whatever gimmick is possible.
I know that the internet is a big competitor to comics as a business (as well as magazines), but this event just smacks of desperation.
Can't help but feel that if the new movie comes out with a giant costume change- that that would negate any other real goodwill that comes of it.
Out of all the superhero images, Superman was the best and the first. Has been for decades. To toss it aside in comics and film for something 'better' (looking at you, Smallville) is sickening.
SR had darker colors, but it was essentially the same costume. This collar & removal of the shorts is a whole other ballgame. Is anyone digging this new look?

This collar & removal of the shorts is a whole other ballgame. Is anyone digging this new look? Oddly, I find the shorts helped to make his suit look whole in a general way, not distracting at all, pretty much the same way a background makes the subject of a drawing complete. It's there but we don't pore over the background, we just focus on the subject. But when the background's missing, rather than looking at the subject we become distracted with the lack of background. That's the same vibe I get off the no-shorts I get a feeling they'll eventually revert back to the tried & tested classic look. DC's pulling all the stops to get noticed (internal troubles brewing?) sans integrity on their word. I mean, how many times already they make announcements like these? Any bombsheck announcements always end up being the same: a bomb
