I still don't like the idea of a sculpted rubber suit for Superman. That being said, those pictures look about as good as a costume like that's going to. I'm actually impressed, especially considering some of the concept art that's come out over the year. It could've been a A LOT worse.
Cage is ALL wrong for the part though.
I'd never thought about it like this before, but it's interesting how in both the 90s and today WB has turned to their successful Batman director to resurrect their troubled Superman franchise. And while Nolan teamed with Goyer and Snyder is a good team for MOS, WB needs to learn that what works for one hero doesn't necessarily always for another.

The costume doesn't look horrible, though cage in it does, but the gigantic underwear are quite ridiculous.

My instinct upon first seeing that pic?
AWESOME.
I mean, it's something we've been dying to see for ages, and it's really actually kinda cool. It definitely looks like Cage from around that time, and I dunno...the suit looks pretty bad ass, I have to admit, and Cage doesn't look that bad in it.
I've ALWAYS been a "If only..." kinda person about the Superman Lives movie. I wanted it from day one. I didn't expect anything other than an incredibly interesting movie from Burton and Cage. FUCK, I mean, just imagine those two around that time? Their hey-dey, really? Damn. It would've been something.

Assuming these are legit (I'm still not convinced), they look pretty good.
Most of the Superman Lives scripts involved him wearing a fairly faithful costume (like that one) for the first third of the movie, and then coming back in ridiculous toy costumes after he dies and returns.

The costume just looks fantastic.
I feel like it would have been an incredibly awesome movie for the time.

I've read all of the screenplays. The Smith script was the best of them. Let me say that again: THE SMITH SCRIPT WAS THE BEST OF THEM. By a lot.
This movie would have been terrible, and you'd have hated it passionately.
The William Wisher script is especially horrible...the Dan Gilroy one might be worse.

In other words, it would have derailed the franchise for about 10 years or so and we'd get this reboot anyway?

That's actually......not so bad..... Fuck it, that movie would have been interesting as heck. Maybe not good. But I bet a blast to watch. . sure as heck it'd be better than superman IV- and less UN intentionally hilarious. i'd like to see someone do a short film, just a few scenes with cage as superman- like for an SNL skit or something. I really wish this movie happened. It would have been the B&R of the series but at least we'd have gotten the BB equivalent sooner. In other words, it would have derailed the franchise for about 10 years or so and we'd get this reboot anyway? i've often thought the same- it would have been ridiculously bad, but it may have kept a little more momentum happening as opposed to the 20 year gap between S:IV and SR. so if it HAD happened i think we'd have seen a reboot much much sooner. maybe even the abrams trilogy. I've read all of the screenplays. The Smith script was the best of them. Let me say that again: THE SMITH SCRIPT WAS THE BEST OF THEM. By a lot. This movie would have been terrible, and you'd have hated it passionately. The William Wisher script is especially horrible...the Dan Gilroy one might be worse. oh absolutely. MOST of the worst of it can be blamed on jon peters, and later writers. but even smith's script has plenty of ugly on it. we'd hate it- but in a perverse way i'm still curious to imagine watching it.

The Smith script would have successfully relaunched the franchise. And for all the weird stuff in it, at the end, it's VERY Superman. There's a terrific Krypton sequence in there, and for the first act and some of the last act, Supes acts like Supes and wears the traditional costume.
The Wisher draft? The Gilroy draft? Not at all. Those WOULD have been the B&R of the series, but for different reasons. They're not light or funny. Superman acts like Dirty Harry, threatening people, really hurting them...PEOPLE. Not aliens or robots. People. In either the Gilroy or Wisher draft it's implied that the suit should be black. They're ridiculously over-serious, with moments of "summer blockbuster by numbers" ha-ha stuff. Like Lois having a sassy 10 year old niece, and Brainiac going to a nightclub and hanging out with SHAQUILLE O'NEAL AND MARTHA STEWART.
Oh, and, lest I forget...LEXIAC. That's right. That's not me being snarky and making up a conjoined name. That happens. That's what he/they get called.
I assure you. You would not want to see this movie.

I'm really, really glad it didn't happen, mostly because it would have been a compromised corporate pile of crap made for the sole, cynical purpose of selling merchandise. Was Burton right for the movie? Would Cage have been great? Doesn't matter. They weren't in charge. Jon Peters had a hands-on role in the production of this film. I repeat: JON PETERS HAD A HANDS ON ROLE IN THE PRODUCTION OF THIS FILM. I think you'd have to be crazy to look back at this thing and say to yourself, "Yeah, I would've loved to have seen Jon Peters' vision come to life."
The Gilroy script is the one they were sitting on when they canned the project, and that says it all. Whatever good was in Smith's script, it had been siphoned out and obliterated by the time the film was close to the intended start of production.
We dodged a huge, huge bullet.

Well..... As long as there would have been some sort of reboot that took it closer to the comics down the line, (given that it was in limbo for 20 years even without it coming out), I wouldn't have minded seeing it.... After all, it's not like we were going to get Reeve or Donner back to the series...
And, Judging by the scraps we got, it looks like it would have been one weird expensive failure --- but a visually striking one.

HUGE! I've never read this draft. Pretty sure it's the only one I don't know. I won't be able to get to it until next week. THRILLED!

Pretty funny, this guy announced his documentary to raise funds and the next week stuff starts leaking. Wondering if this is WB's way of taking away his steam for kickstarting? Strange, I've talked to more people recently about "Did you see that Nick Cage as Superman pic" than I have about anything regarding MOS.

thirty pages into this...
...it's...BY FAR the worst of them. And, oh yeah, THIS is the one that Tim Burton REALLY wanted to make.
It's terrible. The Gilroy and Wisher drafts are STM compared to this.

For all the flack the Smith script gets, it would have been fun, colorful, and exciting. Especially his first draft, before Peters really started meddling. Some "Smith-like" dialogue aside, for the most part, it reads like an episode of Superman: The Animated Series.
Not these other ones, boy...

Remember that the next time you get all, "Man, I wish we could have seen Burton's Superman. It would have been really interesting..." This piece of garbage reads like Mars Attacks with Superman and Brainiac. Only not as good.
