Thanos was created by Jim Starlin shortly after Kirby left Marvel for DC. The similarities to Darkseid are...probably not coincidental. That being said, Infinity Gauntlet is a GREAT read, and has some gorgeous George Perez/Ron Lim artwork.
For other brilliant Marvel cosmic stuff (which also features Thanos) check out the first three TPBs of Annihilation.

What about Secret Wars?

some really cool action figures. not as cool as "super powers". but cool. almost the same scale. slightly smaller. close enough to get away with kang and magneto hangin with brainiac and penguin. oddly enough, they ALL had shields, yet captain america - who actually HAD a shield - had the same silly shield as everyone else.

Never read it. Always meant to.
If you're looking for classic, epic scale, Avengers type stuff, go for the Kree/Skrull War tpb, Avengers Forever, and the brand new collections of the EPIC Busiek/Perez Avengers run, currently collected under the name "Avengers Assemble". Volume 3 just came out. This is epic superhero stuff on an even grander scale than Reign of the Supermen.

Well, you can borrow Secret Wars whenever I get it, if you want. I won't be reading it any time soon, I'm just stockpiling the shit out of TPBs right now for the summer so I don't have to buy shit for a very, very long time.
I also got Infinity Gauntlet, Marvel Masterworks Spidey 1, DD: Man Without Fear and Wolverine in Japan. And Legends. And Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. And Spidey 247-248, just....just 'cuz Shogun said to...

When we meet up, I'm bringing a notepad to jot down everything....or I could take notes here.....
...anyway, just started reading X-Men starting with the Giant Size and onwards. This stuff is so awesome...it's amazing how the 90s cartoon got it sooo right.
2 things: Claremont saved X-Men pretty much and the X-Men are like the second string behind the Avengers.

The beginning of Marvel Comics! Last night, I read the first ten pages of the FF Masterworks before passing out.
It is EXCELLENT. The art is gorgeous! I love the dialogue. I have a feeling I'm really going to enjoy the heck out of all these Marvel comics.

heh. If you liked that, wait til you get to the later issues. Early FF is basically just a Challengers of the Unknown ripoff. It took a year or two to come into its own, and then it's just...flawless. You're in for some of the best comics you'll ever read in your life.

Yeah, I have a feeling I'm going to hate you for all of this, even though I asked, and also, I'm going to become a comics expert, historian if you will, and try to cash in on all this Avengers craze. Comic book movies are probably going to come fast and hard (uh huh huh huh...uhhhh huh huh huh) and there might as well be one of us for these fuckers to talk to.
Wouldn't that be rad?
Anyhoo. I got Legends today, also. I've wanted to read that since I was a little kid, never have. Also got DD Masterworks, Wolverine in Japan and Indy: Fate of Atlantis today! Huzzah!

And Spidey 247-248, just....just 'cuz Shogun said to... No! I said 229-230 and 248! 229-230 Spidey is taking on the unstoppable Juggernaut which is a really good story and I've seen it on several "Top 10 Spidey stories of all time" lists. 248 is a really good, touching story...really it's the BACK-UP story I am referring to in it. 247 is going to get you a match-up versus....the FROGMAN

The Juggernauts were too pricey, and 248 said it was part two of a two parter, so I went for it. I don't really care. I got 247, 248, 306, 312, 330 and 364. Their covers and descriptions tickled me, I guess.
I'm just going to shotgun approach stuff. Just get random shit from Marvel and DC history, here and there through the 70's and 80's. Under $1.00 sorta things. No huge storylines. Just general issues. Where the real meat is! The fun! Hopefully!
I'm up to issue 4 of FF, I'm LOVING it.

I'm gonna have to do what you did and order a ton of books because I'm going through them like toilet paper after a Mexican buffet. The only downside with masterworks is that you get like 10 issues per book, but at the $15 price I pay...that's a great deal.

Exactly. Know where to look, and it's not that expensive. Once I've gotten everything, I should just take a picture of everything I've got. I love just looking at them. Staring at them. It's creepy, I know. I do it with my blurays, too. And TVs. Even when they're off. I like just looking at things I've managed to get.

Volume 1 of 100 Bullets deluxe...hardcover...I can find that for $30 and it has the first 19 issues. I'm not a fan of hardcover because I'm not really "collector". But still, that's a pretty good price.
Amazon is usually my go-to. It gives me a good idea what the ideal price should be. Then I'll go to ebay to see how low I can find it in the best condition. If there are other sites you use that have better deals, let me know.

Tis all good...that era of Spidey is pretty good in general...all the mystery with the Hobgoblin...Cobra and Hyde...the 2 issues of Hydro-man and Sandman....good stuff. The early FF issues are a hoot. I recently acquired a poor copy of #12 when Thing found the Hulk for the 1st time...awesome stuff. Early issues of the Hulk for that matter are wacky too....he's gray, he changes into the Hulk when it turns night....wildly different.

Almost read the entire first FF collection yesterday. I'm nuts about it. It rules. Like, a lot. This is another one of those instances where I'm pissed at my past self for not getting into Marvel ages ago, but I'm glad at my past self for letting me discover it NOW. And furthermore, I can't believe how much I'm enjoying the FF. I always thought they were lame. I think I only read one story of their, I THINK, and it was an FF/X-Men teamup TPB. I dunno. Maybe? Anyhoo. I can't wait to get farther into this.
I was able to find a "10 Greatest Spidey Stories Ever" that has the Juggernaut story in it, and, apparently, 9 other great Spidey stories.
What about Kraven's Last Hunt?

What about Kraven's Last Hunt? It's killer. Very dark. I haven't read it in a long time but I remember it being a heavy read. By the way, Secret Wars pretty much sucked. Mike Zeck's covers were great but it's not a great read.

I'm reading mixed reviews but I tend to dig this sort of stuff anyway. Being so uneducated in Marvel, I'll probably enjoy the shit out of it even if it's halfway fun.

I have to read Secret Wars again...it's been so long. All I remember is Spidey getting the black suit. My wife it start to read a bunch of stuff as well...it's so much fun answering her questions about who's this and what's that.

I just read Avengers #1 courtesy of the Masterworks...
Jeezus...what a hoot. Hulk is intelligent and masquerades as a circus clown to be incognito...but not just a clown...a robotclown, because no human could be that strong.
Antman and Wasp travel 1000+ miles to intercept a distress signal...of course they travelled by wasp. (Couldn't they increase to normal size?)
I can't believe Stan Lee never did pot.

Fantastic Four was fucking INCREDIBLE. Ohhh, I loved it. I'm halfway through with The Incredible Hulk and it's...not really doing it for me. I dig it, don't get me wrong, but I don't feel the need to read further in the TPBs. I'm fine with the one. But FF, I almost bought all of them yesterday. I loved the SHIT out of it.

Can't say it enough. the Lee/Kirby FF issues are some of the finest, if not THE finest superhero comics ever made.

I received today "Secret Wars" (it's fucking HUUUUGE) and Spidey Masterworks. The gray boarder! You were right, Val, the art early on is kinda wonky.

Don't underestimate Ditko, though. The beauty of those first few years of Spidey is that it's not a traditional superhero book. It's really moody and weird and kinda creepy. Spidey is really a pathetic kid who fights other pathetic freaks. When you're reading it side-by-side with other Marvel stuff, it's even more amazing. You've got the FF fighting these world-beating menaces and hopping dimensions and stuff, with all of this incredibly dynamic Jack Kirby artwork, and then you've got skinny-ass Spider-Man fighting pathetic freaks like Vulture and Sandman, with an aunt who's about to croak at any second, and the art is all shadow-y and stuff. It's fucking amazing.
I'm a huge fan of the Lee/Romita Spidey stuff as well, but that definitely became more of a "traditional" superhero book when Romita took over. The Ditko stuff feels like you're reading some crazy, underground comics deconstruction of the genre.
The early Hulk and X-Men aren't my favorites. But FF, Spidey, Thor, and the Captain America stuff from when they revived him all pretty much own the universe.
