What about Cap's first appearance ever? Is that worth getting? Or even possible?
Now I got my roommate reading the FF. HAHAHAHA!

The original Joe Simon/Jack Kirby Captain America stuff is available in reprints, but you're much better off with the Captain America Masterworks volumes that reprint his Tales of Suspense stories from the 60s. Those basically pick up right after his revival in Avengers #4, they tell some modern day stories, and then they re-tell his origin and do a whole ton of WWII stories.
They are fucking fantastic comics. Incredibly dynamic artwork, with panels and panels of Cap just taking out Nazis and thugs by the DOZEN. This shit looks like it's actually animated on the page. Probably my 2nd favorite Lee/Kirby stuff after FF, and easily my favorite Captain America stories ever.
It's a couple of volumes of Lee/Kirby, plus some awesome Jim Steranko in there. There's also an "Omnibus" edition that reprints the COMPLETE Lee/Kirby run, plus the Steranko issues, all in one huge volume. I'd get this stuff first, THEN go back to the 1940s Simon/Kirby issues.

mentioned this earlier but i wanted to add, i have a very battered and beat up HC copy of " marvels greatest superhero battles" - if you ever see this in a flea market, or used book store or ebay just GET IT. it's so cool for what it is- a beautiful collection of 60's/70's marvel at a time when "real" bookstores would rarely lower themselves to carry comic books, and most comics were sold at newstands and grocery stores and so on. marvel and DC would only sporadically license reprints in HC or paperback of comics for mass market. THIS was the book that opened marvel to me in a BIG way. as a toddler i knew HULK from the tv show, watched super friends, and the fantastic four cartoon. but i just didn;t know a whole lot about the rest of either universe. my parents were schizo about comic books and superhero cartoons. sometimes they were "whatever" other times it was a stoning offence and i learned to by quite the contraband smuggler... ;D so, i had a LOT to learn. so much so that when i saw silver surfer on the cover i thought it might have been "iceman" from the spider man cartoon! ;D i just gave it to my older boy for his collection. after seeing avengers he is reeeaaaaallllly wanting to get a better handle on marvel. he's really digging it.

I've been contemplating in getting into Daredevil once I explore Fantastic Four and Spider-Man (next X-Men volume TPB doesn't come out until July!!!!!). Are the first issues interesting to get into or should I just jump into Miller's issues?
I was actually thinking about getting one volume today...it turns out the stuff I ordered isn't coming until next week, which utterly fucks up my plans to read over the weekend.

There's some great Bill Everett/Wally Wood artwork in those early DD's, but the few I've read haven't really struck me as REQUIRED reading. But if you're digging the whole early Marvel vibe, then go for it. Otherwise, the Miller stuff, followed by the Bendis stuff is definitely what you want for DD.
Or, better yet, just start picking up the current Mark Waid series, which is probably my favorite comic at the moment.

I may just get the first masterwork volume and see how it goes. I was paging through some of the old and Miller stuff and the artwork is fantastic. I can totally see how Daredevil works best as a late 70s/early 80s crime movie. I know I'll totally dig Miller's stuff and I'll look into the current stuff once I'm through with that.
I was contemplating in getting Knightfall, but I think I'll wait after I see The Dark Knight Rises.
In the meantime, I got the first Fantastic Four volume to read as well as 3 volumes worth of 100 Bullets, which I didn't get around to continue reading. Shit...with the other stuff coming in the mail, I'm fully stocked with comics for at least a good, two weeks.

Daredevil was more of a Spider-man knock-off early on. Wise-cracking, love triangle, silly villians. Still, I've give the first 10-12 issues a shot. Then skip on down to the Miller issues (both runs), the Kevin Smith reboot, and Bendis' run is amazing.

The more time passes, and more information comes out about Lee, Ditko, and Kirby- (plus comparing it to work now).... what Lee/Ditko and Lee/Kirby did for superhero comics is just ASTOUNDING--- Ditko and Kirby did amazing things, but Lee's dialogue and sense of humor is a great counterbalance to some of Ditko and Kirby's excesses at times (New Gods is genius work, but the dialogue is painful- Ditko has far-out concepts that few can touch, but the humanity that Lee put into grounding many of his stories really made the projects they did together far better than individual work that Ditko did on his own). Also, don't know if I've mentioned it, but there's a FANTASTIC documentary on Ditko & Ditko's part in Marvel comics here... www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfxVO0fLHvA

Reread Year One and The Long Halloween over the past couple of days. Going through Dark Victory now, then Dark Knight Returns. Still gotta buy Hush and Knightfall, that'll happen very soon.
I might just have to spend my free time this summer devouring comics, it's been way too long.

Try The Killing Joke as well. Getting into the Batman spirit, I see. Merm, I seriously suggest you get into the old Marvel comics. They're certainly up your alley....that 60s quirkiness you seem to dig at times. But do that once you get Batman out of your system.

After finishing Dark Victory, I think I like it a little more than Long Halloween - even though TLH is the stronger story (it works even if you've never read Year One; DV sorta requires that you read its predecessor first), it's cool how Dark Victory just builds on everything that's gone before and runs with it. Try The Killing Joke as well. Getting into the Batman spirit, I see. Merm, I seriously suggest you get into the old Marvel comics. They're certainly up your alley....that 60s quirkiness you seem to dig at times. But do that once you get Batman out of your system. The Bat probably won't be out of my system until TDKR's opening weekend, but sure. Got any suggestions?

Kevin, when you were reading the Fantastic Four comics, did you read them like they were like Adam West Batman/Simpsons Radioactive Man? That's how I'm reading them and I gotta say, it's totally fun. It's also like those 1950s sci-fi B-movie, which I used to love as a kid.
I love how The Thing is just pissed off all the time.

Dude! Radioactive Man ALL the fucking way! Just wonderful, pure, weird, fun, silly shit. I can't wait to read Volume 2. I feel like a little kid.
The Mighty Thor was EXCELLENT. It started off a little weak, or lame, just like the good Doctor Blake, but the rest of the book skyrocketed. I also can't wait to read Vol. 2 of this. Thor rules. What a fun character. I don't care for Blake, to be honest. I didn't even KNOW about Blake, that's how little about Marvel I know, but Thor and the Aasgard stuff fucking kicks ass.
I'm reading Spidey now. It's doing the same thing as Thor did for me. Start off pretty good but now it's getting REALLY damn fun. I get to see the origins of Doc Oc and Electro next! I LOVE it. Funny how Peter is kind of a piece of shit.

Electro...from Endicot, NY...same as my wife.

Fantastic Four.....they're all going to die from asbestos exposure and it's all Human Torch's fault.

What do all you recommend Flash-wise? The mark waid run in the early 2000s was pretty good. I recently aquired the early 80s arc where professor zoom framed barry allen - its good but not as amazing as I remember from back in the day.

Indeed. That stuff fucking RULES. I need to get the rest of that whole arc with the Death of and stuff.
I just finished the Masterworks of Iron Man, Vol. 1. LOVED IT. I can't wait to read the second volume. Thus far, everything has really worked for me other than the Hulk. I'm reading the Avengers next, then Cap, then X-Men, then DD, then a bunch of other shit I've been putting off.
I'm reading this stuff late at night with Seinfeld on in the background. Summer nights.

I started The Amazing Spider-Man masterworks. Ditko's artwork has a more exciting and "kinetic" feel to it, which I'm really digging. These comics, particularly, don't feel as dated with the exception of everything being affected by atomic radiation. I can see myself reading these all to the way to McFarlane era.
I may take a break and dig into Knightfall after I see The Dark Knight Rises, but I definitely bounce back into Marvel.
Kevin, Iron Man was good, huh?

Iron Man was really damn good, yeah. Very fun. I'd say, out of all the old school Marvel Masterworks books I've read in the past few weeks, here'd be the ranking:
1. Fantastic Four 2. Amazing Spider-Man 3. The Invincible Iron Man 4. The Incredible Hulk
The first three are very neck and neck, with the fourth way out behind them all.
When I got all my old Flash comics, one of the lots I won on eBay had about a hundred extra comics of just random shit, some I've never heard of before, some I have. A good amount of Batman comics, actually, and random ones from the 80's and 90's. I love reading that way. Just get a good sense of what was happening around that time without knowing completely what's going on in the grand scheme of the overall storyline. I just read a bunch of Batman comics from the early 90's. They were FANTASTIC! Very well done. Dramatic as heck!
