I just received "Marvels" in the mail. I've always wanted this. Looks incredible! Can't believe I forgot that one...really cool trek through the Marvel Universe through the eyes of a reporter.

I am, surprisingly, having a hard time getting into the Masterworks Avengers Vol. 1. I don't know why. I'm struggling getting through just the first two issues. Hopefully it'll pick up? These books have a tendency to do that.

It's not my favorite stuff. Avengers doesn't really get great until a little later when the roster starts to expand. It's like the early X-Men stuff. It's not Kirby's best work, and it's REALLY overwritten by Lee.

It is SO overwritten. The conflict doesn't really happen until the last few pages and that's it. Quickly taken care of. Meh. I'll speed through this, probably won't get Vol. 2. Disappointing!

Val said it best.....the idea is great, but that's it. In fact, everything you've said about the comics have been spot on.
Spider-Man is great. I can see how this comic took off by storm. This one and The Fantastic Four have a lot of personality, which is so damn important.
Uncanny X-Men Vol. 5 should come in the mail tomorrow. I believe I'll be getting into the Dark Phoenix saga/heckfire Club stuff. Those are the ones you should be reading next, Kevin. Unfortunately, the paperbacks only go up to vol.5 as of now...which is infuriating because I'm wondering if I should just get the hardcovers. They're that good.

Keep in mind that by the time Avengers was happening, Lee/Kirby (and Don Heck, etc) were cranking out SO many books a month that something was bound to suffer. And frankly, Avengers just seemed to be a cash-in idea at the time. "Let's take all of our best heroes, and a couple who don't sell as well, and make a team book! It'll write itself!" Just like the early X-Men stuff is pretty much an attempt to duplicate the FF formula (right down to how early Beast is just a Ben Grimm clone, before they decided to make him the resident genius).
I maintain that the very best of the early Marvel stuff, the shit you just can't live without, is FF, Spidey, and Thor. Those concepts are just so completely unique, and you can tell that the creative teams were totally invested in them. Avengers doesn't get good until later. X-Men doesn't get REMOTELY good until almost ten years later, when Claremont comes in. Hulk and Iron Man, while brilliant characters/concepts, don't necessarily have that many great stories to tell.
If you haven't already, get the Captain America Masterworks stuff. Not the Golden Age ones, just the straight-up 60s stuff. Those are fantastic. Kirby clearly has fun with those early short stories, and the re-telling of the stuff from the 40s. You just get pages and pages of Cap kicking the fuck out of a dozen guys at a time, and the fight scenes practically move on the page. If you're stuck for the next Marvel volume to check out, this is it.

Cap's next. If I don't enjoy the next issue of Avengers, I'll skip the rest and go right to Cap.
(EDIT)
Cap has now joined the Avengers. This book is now awesome. I felt like a little kid reading last night. A little drunk kid, of course. So...yeah...a little kid.
