I think CAM is right. The thing is, SR is only a divisive movie among serious fans. Most "normals" don't have a terribly strong opinion of it one way or the other. They either saw it and enjoyed it (or didn't) or didn't see it at all.
SR was a movie made for a very specific group of Superman fans, and in no way felt like a big, summer blockbuster (I sometimes feel it would have been better served with a Christmas release) while MOS is going out of its way to appeal to the Avengers crowd. The buzz on this movie is really strong, which, outside of hardcore fans, I don't remember it being for SR. The series of hideous posters (the awesome "Earth" one notwithstanding) and bizarre promotional art for SR didn't help, either.
I'll safely put this at or close to 100 million on opening weekend.

It's making $100 million easy. Like Kevin said, this movie is coming out at the right time. It's even reaching out to non-Superman fans. Imagine if this movie even inspires the most hardcore, semi-fascist Superman Returns fans.

In On the other hand, SR could have actually damaged MOS in the sense that I think it put people right off Superman. I highly doubt that mate I think SR could have damaged MOS as well. When I mention MOS to my friends, the most common reaction is "Again!?!?".

The world kinda needs a movie like this right now. It might even want it. I think it's gonna be huge. Sent from my SPH-D710 using proboards Absolutely. Not to inject things that aren't directly relevent, but we're in a malaise, the government is as corrupt and inept as ever (more so) - the economy is still shit (no matter how much we lower our standards) terrorism is again looming large. Its a very grim time. People respond to a movie that inspires and uplifts them. How many rocky fans actually watch boxing ? Y'know? Everyone loves rocky because we love how he did what he did and being the underdog good guy. A good superhero movie I like that- most movie goers have no use for the minutia of how much a cbm deviates from the source- if its good its good. I read that iron man3 is tracked at upwards of 120 - with the momentum pushing it hard- but it has 2 weeks to rake it in before captain kirk owns it for a few weeks. Man of steel has a wide open release date, I think eccentric is right - positive reviews and no contraversial elements (super-son etc) could really propel this film to well over 100.

I'll say $100-120 for the Friday-Sunday opening.

There's the wal-mart 7pm screening now on the 13th. So a whole extra special screening that will play into the box office. I'm going to project 90-100 mill for opening weekend. And that includes the Thursday wal-mart screening.

I promise of a Superman film in 3D is a strong selling point.

An opening weekend below $100 million will be hugely disappointing.
Though I'm betting on $150 million!

If I could take back my vote, at this point with the new trailers- if they get enough exposure, I'd agree that it should make $100 million. I do wonder how much it is out there, though. I've only seen it on the big screen a couple of times.

Do you think WB read these threads to make a better prediction of what they think the MOS opening weekend will be?
I'm still going for $150 million!

There was a time when Joss Whedon and the like were coming to conventions, saying that the internet buzz and the like were being paid attention to by the studios.... But then again--- After much wasted p.r. dollars at Comicon over many projects that got raves at the con, but tanked at the box office..... Who knows how much the studios actually track (or put weight on what they track) what's going on with fan forums and websites at this point.....

Theater was almost full tonight, audience responded VERY well through out. This is a crowd pleaser in a non-Avengers sorta way. It's not laughs and fun, it's deeper than that. It's gonna have great word of mouth. It's gonna be HUGE.

Do the wal-mart screenings count towards the weekend box office? Hopefully

I think SR could have damaged MOS as well. When I mention MOS to my friends, the most common reaction is "Again!?!?". That's exactly what Mum said last weekend - "telling another origin story?" I could not disagree. I have no idea about the money. I just hope it does well. Another Super-BOMB would make it a hat-track.

Do the wal-mart screenings count towards the weekend box office? Hopefully Typically not. Anything collected Thursday or before are not part of "official" weekend totals. Which is why when a movie is released on a Wednesday, it has a relatively crappy opening weekend because it's not including the first two days.

From Comic Book Resources
"Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel" is well on its way to a predicted $100 million opening weekend as Variety reports midnight box office numbers of $21 million, with $12 million earned from Walmart's special 7:00 PM ticket package. Although "Man of Steel" beat out the midnight openings of both "Iron Man 3" ($15.6 million) and "The Avengers" ($18.7 million), it was unable to surpass one of the highest midnight-grossing comic book films: Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" ($30 million)."
If you take into account the $21 million from midnight screenings, and the $12 million from the wal-mart that actually puts it past TDKR.

Hm, maybe the 136M figure includes those days. Either way, a sequel is definitely a go.

My bank account is $16 lighter for two tickets, so it should fucking count. Am I not good enough to count in their precious results? What's wrong with me? Fuckin' snobs!

44 million yesterday for a total of 56 million. It looks like 130M was indeed the correct answer.
I'll be interested to see what kind of drop it has in week 2. If it has legs, then it's a good sign for the DC movie universe, ala Iron Man.
Well, Bryan Singer. I guess you should have put more action into your movie. There are no guarantees in this business. Buildings falling down = $$$$$

Wow, after a strong Friday, it bottomed out somewhat on Saturday and Sunday to bring it to 113M for the weekend and 125M total.
That's 14M less than WB was expecting.

We're getting a DC Movie Universe regardless. WB can't afford the bad publicity of another failure to launch. That's why so much of MoS' budget was already made back in endorsements and tie-ins. There is NO WAY they'll be able to say this was anything other than a runaway success, even if it has a huge 2nd weekend drop-off (which is looking very possible).
We WILL see MoS2 and we WILL see a Justice League movie. And we'll see them quickly.
