The word-of-mouth, to me, is average to above average, but not the "OMG!!!! You have to see The Dark Knight NOW!" kinda deal. Unfortunately, it's just not THAT good of a movie. I haven't seen it a second time, but I'm already having trouble remembering scenes.
I am surprised about WWZ's boxoffice since there didn't seem to be much buzz about it, but then they've been HEAVILY advertising it for months, so I don't know.
I enjoyed MoS, it was good, but they didn't nail it. A lot of the movie should've resonated more than it did.

Entertainment Weekly predicts a 70 percent drop off for the second week of the US release. Sequel, my ass. Better hope everywhere else in the world goes to see it and the home release sells like crazy.

It will get to at least $800 million and a billion is still possible.
A sequel is a definite.

Yeah.... I think it's safe to be cautious when WB comes out and says that a sequel is for sure. They said there was going to be a second GL movie--- even after the first weekend was a dud at the boxoffice.
Also, the on again/off again nature of JL--
If it creates giant giant bosoffice, though, it feels like it's a safe thing, but..... I guess it's still a 'wait and see' mode....l

Better hope everywhere else in the world goes to see it and the home release sells like crazy. I think the international grosses will more than save it and it'll probably get a sequel for a lot of reasons. I don't see it getting to a billion though. The talk of a sequel so early was just posturing though. Studios often do that to get or keep people excited about the film on release just like CAM said. I think a lot of people overestimated MOS and underestimated WWZ. I think WWZ has the disaster movie hook going for it and Pitt still has something left in the tank as a recognizable draw even if there were doubts about the film. Average person probably didn't care as much and wanted a popcorn film.

On the other hand MOS has proven to be extremely divisive. Fingers crossed they make enough money to get another bash at it in a sequel, but like you said there's more riding on this for WB than just Superman.

MOS would have to work REALLY hard at being bad to turn off the worldwide audience. The trend has been as long as something has spectacle some territories aren't too picky. MOS has plenty of spectacle. International grosses mean more and more to US film studios. Now films can do weak business in America but do huge business overseas and be considered successes.

Spectacle definitely is easy to translate--- I wasn't too suprised when films like "2012" and all of the Tranformers films make big money- and I was suprised when Avengers made as much as it did overseas, because it actually wasn't wall to wall things blowing up.
I feel pretty convinced that if SR had more in the spectacle department, it would have added more box office dollars. The action there was a bit limp and generic. Given that, I think it's amazing that SR did pretty good overseas anyhow!

Adjusted for inflation, MOS is still around $40 million away from exceeded the boxoffice of Superman Returns.

I think if SR had been released now there's a good chance it would have made a lot more money on overseas grosses alone. It was released before superhero movies set yet another bar at the box office and before the foreign box office was so much higher and more important. Now a lot of crap cleans up overseas that's worse than SR was.
As far as fan reaction I think it's sad that the makers didn't get this: If SR had Superman punching the heck out of some powerful bad guys I think it would be enjoyed by alt more people even if the other flaws were still there

Yeah, WWZ definitely did not suck but it would have been better as an R movie. The only legit thing I've heard is that is strays widely from the book but it really had to.

Went to see This Is The End tonight. Big line for WWZ, I had no idea it was going to be that big, but Man of Steel had a LOT of people going to it, too, normal and 3D.

Yeah crazy! Paramount pulled a miracle, 2 months ago WWZ was all but a guaranteed flop. Then the tide started to change, did Brad Pitt showing up to at early screenings REALLY help the films WOM? It's like as soon as word got out that Pitt took time to meet and greet fans at press screenings... Suddenly, the movie went from "ok" to "We have to see this!"
I wonder if the film will hold up next week? This is Pitts biggest star opening btw... Interesting...

Just shows don't underestimate real star power. Much of the reason I gave the film a chance was because of him. He usually delivers. The film is so so but it's not bad by any means. You can tell he tried hard to salvage it. Between the zombie genre being hot now and all that I guess enough people were curious. Interesting since the marketing was a little vague on the zombie aspect. Film cost a lot though. Not sure if it can make the domestic numbers it needs. But if the foreign box office take is huge it won't matter as much.

Yeah, I had no idea it was a zombie movie until a week or so ago.
I'm a little more forgiving of the "Indiana Jones ants" effects of people piling on each other and out of sinking buses if those are zombies.

I guess I was in the minority on WWZ...I couldn't wait until it came out. The book had a lot of interesting takes on the zombie genre, some were in the movie, some not. But I always thought it would be a good draw. Evidently Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt sorta duked it out to get this movie made. It's quality but coulda been better if R.
And, yes, those 'ants' are indeed zombies. The commercials gave out a bit too much, IMO.

I never read the book but Ive heard about great parts of it from friends that have. I didn't really mind that they changed most things obviously. I wanted to see the movie but I feared it would be crap. I'm glad Pitt got it instead of Cruise. I think he's got enough genre credits to his name. It's good to spread it out a little. Plus he already did WOTW. I think Pitt brought something different that helped the movie more than Cruise would have.
I'd love to see the book properly adapted as a miniseries or even a tv series one day. Doesn't sound like would have worked as it was for a film. Max Brooks seems like a good guy. Very talented and funny in his own right. Runs in the family.

Very reassuring. Its been...3? 3 weeks? Id say a half-bil in 3 weeks in spite of bad press is pretty good.

Hey, $20 mil on week three of a critically split movie is not bad at all! Good for it.

It's nice to see Superman sitting on the #2 spot for the year.
It's a shame it wasn't as good as the Nolan Bat films and therefore stronger word of mouth.
What else is coming out that could top Superman's boxoffice?
The Hobbit 2? I'm guessing that will do it, even though word of mouth on the last one seemed weaker.
