Estimates are already out. Actuals come out Monday afternoons.
They're not usually off by much.

So $125 million, about 25% more than what Warner Bros were estimating.
The second weekend will be very important, and if word of mouth is good, which I think it is and repeat viewings are in order, which I think they are, then the second weekend gross may only slide 40%.
In fact I predict MOS will have strong weekends for the next 4 or 5 weeks and it will catch up with and surpass Iron Man 3's $400 million US gross.

$113 million for the weekend...$125 million total.
That's #1 for a June release (beating Toy Story 3 by $3 million).
That's #4 among non-sequels (behind Hunger Games, Alice in Wonderland, and Spider-man). Add Thursday in and it's #2 behind Hunger Games.
I'll put a friendly wager against that.

Deadline reports that the Sunday matinee was +18% 0ver the Saturday metinee which is unusual- usually saturdays are bigger. Its assumed that fathers day may have been the factor for the uptick.

I went to the matinee in my small town yesterday and was surprised with the amount of people in there, especially for a Sunday afternoon.. Usually matinees here don't fill up like it was. It's getting good word of mouth in my town.

Final figures are in and the Father's Day boost has put MOS 3% higher than originally estimated, with the Thursday to Sunday gross now at $128 million and breaking the $200 million mark worldwide!

Anxious to see what mixed word-of-mouth and World War Z does to it next weekend.

I actually want to see World War Z, but out of respect to my favourite comic book character i'll hold off and download it later. I mean I personally think it looks like it could be good, yet I desperately want it to fail badly

World War Z doesn't look that appealing to me. It's a rental... Maybe.

As I've already seen MOS 3 times over the weekend, I'll give World War Z a chance next weekend. Looks intriguing though I expect it to disappoint and flop, with MOS coming out as the big winner!
Even Monsters University doesn't look that impressive and I really loved Inc.
Expect at least $70 million for MOS next weekend.

70? That's if the movie has excellent word of mouth, and the word of mouth is only so-so to decent. Movies with big openings usually have 55-60% drops in week 2.
It'll bring in 50M next weekend.

June 17, 2013: Update on "Man of Steel" Box Office SuccessPrint Man of Steel BoxOffice.com reports that "Man of Steel" broke through the $200 Million point on its opening weekend.
Revised figures from Warner Brothers indicate that Man of Steel broke the $200 million mark over the weekend. The North American debut for the Superman reboot exceeded expectations by taking in $128.7 million, up from Sunday's $125 million estimate.
The overseas grosses also came in higher than originally reported. New figures from Warner Brothers point to a $73.3 million debut for Man of Steel outside of North America. The Superman reboot grossed $202.1 million worldwide in its opening weekend.
This is very encouraging, especially when you consider that "Man of Steel" hasn't even been released in countries like Australia and New Zealand as yet.
Additionally, Reuters reports that "Man of Steel" has broken the record for the biggest June opening ever.
"Today is a big day for us," said Warner Bros' president of theatrical distribution Dan Fellman, noting the film's record opening. He added that "Man of Steel" was now well-poised to reap big box office "in the heart of the summer play time."
The studio was also pleased by 56 percent male, 44 percent female audience, which Fellman said bodes well being a higher-female makeup that was usual for superhero-centred pictures.
"The film is playing extremely well for fan boys as well as the family," he said

Is it just me or does that seem there has been a lot of inflation in recent years? Ticket prices keep going up, and now more movies are playing on IMAX, which have even larger markups. In five years, making $100 million in an opening weekend will be a disappointment.

With Monsters Uni and World War Z overperforming at the box office, MOS is looking at a much larger than expected decline of 70% in its second weekend and just $40 million, compared with estimated grosses of $80 million for MU and big surprise of $65 million for WWZ.
A huge weekend for the US box office but a big disappointment for MOS in its second weekend. Lets hope it can pick up the pace again next weekend from good word of mouth and repeat viewings.
WWZ was a great film, surprisingly scary, fast paced and intense throughout.
But simply for creating more Superman fans and winning back old ones, I do hope MOS has some long legs this summer.

It won't. It'll be out of the top ten by two weeks from now. Sent from my SPH-D710 using proboards Two weeks? Nah, that's too pessimistic. It should hover in the 5-10 range for a month. It's not gonna have a 70% drop though. With 12.7M yesterday, it should do close to 50M, which is normal.
