I know this isn't exactly pertaining to the MOS dvd--- but I do find it interesting how WB used SR to launch the awesome box set with a 'new' Donner cut, restored Fleischer animations, plus the first Superboy dvd set to cross-promote SR--- But.... is it just me, or does it seem pretty sad that (considering how MOS made more $$$ than SR) there hasn't been any 'new' Superman material on dvd to cross-promote MOS? I know I kept hoping that (though I knew it was THIN hope) we would get more vintage Donner stuff- a new documentary or more deleted material or something, but (while it is cool) we got the two-minute animated short covering the different Supermen over time--- you'd think there would be SOMETHING more (even if only an extended cut of MOS or deleted scenes) as a tie-in. I know it's been covered a bit in the forum about the possible whys (lowered dvd sales overall and little/no interest in going back to the vaults by WB), but at the very least I would have thought MOS's financial success would have convinced WB to splurge a bit more in the dvd cross promotions... Ah well...

Not a bit bothered by it. The original movies are done to death. We've had the 2000 VHS box set and DVD set, the 2006 box set, and the 2011 Blu-ray set. That's enough. Plus, the new movie doesn't tie into the old movies in any way as SR did.

So I had some time today to check out the special features. I decided to go for the in-screen documentary whatever since the wife wants to watch the movie again and has no interest in behind-the-scenes stuff. I've never watched a movie that did this, so I was surprised by how much more convenient this is than just watching the typical "making of" feature that spends 30 percent of the time having everyone involved jerking each other off about how much they loved working together and how talented everyone is and how hard working blah blah blah. Sure, there was a little bit of that, but most of the bullshit was kept to a dull roar.
Some quick thoughts: 1. Michael Shannon is a fine actor, but he looks downright uncomfortable just trying to carry on a conversation to the camera about the movie. And he plays with himself the entire time (I meant the doll!). I was surprised at how much of his costume was digital. I thought it was real during the non-fight scenes. That's some fantastic effects work.
2. The look of the teacher when Clark's visions randomly cycles through multiple spectrums of light was partially inspired by "They Live." JOHN CARPENTER RULES!
3. A lot of WB TV character actors appeared in this thing. One: guy in the Arctic scientific team was Emil Hamilton on "Smallville." Two: One of the Kryptonian elders plays Death on "Supernatural." Three: Asshole trucker had a guest spot as a fellow monster hunter on "Supernatural." Those are just the few I spotted today.
4. When did extras get uppity? Anyone else notice that Lawrence Fishburn referred to them as "background artists?" You mean the guys on the visual effects team that made the CGI city or CGI Krypton? No, he meant the fucking extras running around Metropolis as the Black Zero/World Engine gangbangs the planet on both ends.
5. The guy playing Emil Hamilton had absolutely nothing to contribute. Why was he even there?
6. Holy shit, they put a lot of possibly unnecessary work into making a Kryptonian language. Throughout the past few decades, the comics and "Smallville" used the same Kryptonian alphabet (the 26 letters in the English alphabet at least) and just arranged words letter for letter so we dorks could figure out what the heck the writer is getting at. However, the linguists used for MoS didn't go that easy a route. No, they created new glyphs not as letters but as phonetics or syllables. Here's an example: One Krptonian word spelled out both "bot" and "boot." But, there's a difference. The symbol for "o" is not repeated to make a distinction between the words. Instead, the direction of one piece of the symbol for "o" changes from right to left. In one instance, we know it's a short "o" sound. Bot. When flipped, the symbol is like a long "o" or "oo." Boot. The amount of work ... fucking crazy. I'm impressed.
7. I was hoping we'd get a little more on the costume. I know we did earlier during the Krypton scenes as they explained how the entire look of Krypton had to tie into something that would resemble the classic suit, but I was not clear on what came first: designing the suit to fit the look of Krypton or designing Krypton to have the suit make sense. I know they said that they started with the letter "S" on the shield and worked to make the Kryptonian symbols fit (no different than what Donner did). I just wonder how hard Snyder worked to keep the red trunks. I'm fine without them, but you never saw a prototype suit with them. If he had them at all, it was only on paper. They went out the window early. I liked how understated some of the panels on the rib cage and legs became considering how overstated they were on the prototype costume. Also, did they intend to take the yellow out of the "S" shield or was that just a unfinished shield cut out so they could determine the final size? I think the yellow, no matter how dull they made it, has to stay. The red/blue contrast for the "S" shield is too jarring on the eye. Red and blue are primary colors, so they're competing for your eye's attention. At least having red and dulling the S allows it to pop out.
8. I enjoyed how Russell Crowe talked about learning how to take deep breaths and increase his lung capacity while training for the underwater shooting. This, from a guy who was photographed smoking cigarettes in between takes and while still in costume.
As for the other features, I'll need to re-watch the one where it's presented like some fucked up Discovery Channel documentary about Krypton, aired a few months after the Metropolis gangbang.
I still love how Hans Zimmer created the soundtrack. A dozen drummers and steel guitars? Seriously, that's mad genius. Sure, steel guitars can be manipulated like any stringed instrument, but they have the whole honky-tonk reputation that they're overlooked for only playing the two kinds of music found at Bob's Country Bunker: country and western.

The guy playing Emil Hamilton had absolutely nothing to contribute. Why was he even there? . I have this huge hunch that--- while it looked cool--- having the actors give quick on-the-spot commentary on-stage, dressed up, and on the white soundstage made ALL of the actors look a bit uncomfortable. I would have rather they had the actors sit down and be comfortable shooting the breeze while recording and watching the film. One of the better uses of filming the actors during commentary I thought was in Donner's The Goonies, where you saw the actors around a table relaxed and watching the film & making comments while being recorded. If they do another 'commentary', hopefully they'll let the actors be in a situation where they'd seem more relaxed. I was hoping for on-set stories and other revelations, but they all look like they felt the pressure to be 'on', without a script. It's a little ironic that the tech guys come off far more comfortable talking on that white soundstage than the actors! Still..... well put-together dvd!

LOVED the immersive doc.
zack did that with "watchmen".
i cant wait to watch it again.
the faux-doc about "first contact in metropolis" was pretty neat. it gave them a chance to "explain" things for easily confused/drunk critics while keeping the veneer of realism for the film.

Come to think of it, there a lot of promo vids that WB put out there to promote the movie and even the blu/dvd.
There was a cool featurette about hans and how he inevted new percussion instruments/devices for the score. Id like to see that on the double dip.
