Warners: No More SnyderVerse, No AyerCut

Fans finally got to see all four hours of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” from Thursday and so far the reaction has been excellent if a little divided.

All seem to agree it’s an improvement on the Joss Whedon cut, how much of an improvement is up for debate. From my observations, a sizable contingent still hate it but more intriguingly plenty of Snyder sceptics have widely praised the film with a good proportion full-on loving it.

In the wake of the release, a vocal group of fans want more and want Snyder to complete his original five-film SnyderVerse vision of the three movies he’s done plus two follow-ups to “Justice League”.

Snyder himself, though happy to discuss what he had planned, has indicated he’s not doing any further DC films and now WarnerMedia Studios CEO Ann Sarnoff confirms the SnyderVerse is now a dead end.

Speaking with Variety, she was asked about the #RestoreTheSnyderVerse campaign underway, she said:

“I appreciate that they love Zack’s work and we are very thankful for his many contributions to DC. We’re just so happy that he could bring his cut of the ‘Justice League’ to life because that wasn’t in the plan until about a year ago. With that comes the completion of his trilogy. We’re very happy we’ve done this, but we’re very excited about the plans we have for all the multi-dimensional DC characters that are being developed right now.”

Part of the reason they are moving on according to Sarnoff is that Warners now seems to have finally gotten some big DC plans of their own – a multi-platform future where the characters pop up on streaming shows, video games, TV spinoffs, and movies along with a diverse range of creators:

“We’re always going to listen to our fans, but we are in service of the broadest fanbase and we owe them an integrated, holistic strategy. We are the shepherds of the franchise and hopefully when the fans see what we’ve got in store they’ll know that DC is in good hands across many different platforms with many different creators. We want different voices in the mix.

For certain fans that want singular voices, they may be disappointed, but we would ask them to be patient and see what we’ve got in store because perhaps the newer voices in the mix will have just as compelling stories to tell. On balance, you of course want to listen to your fans, but we do want to stay true to our vision and our mission for DC and build that out.”

She cites a show like the upcoming “Peacemaker” series spin-off of James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” as an example of the new and more unified vision for DC, adding that “you’ll see a lot more of that going forward.”

That said, there will also be original things in businesses that don’t relate which allows them to do standalone works like Todd Phillips’ “Joker” or Matt Reeves’ “The Batman”.

Sarnoff also confirms there are no plans to allow David Ayer to do his ‘preferred cut’ of “Suicide Squad,” saying very clearly: “We won’t be developing David Ayer’s cut.”

Keaton’s Batman Return In “Flash” Uncertain

Michael Keaton has himself sparked questions as to whether reports of his return to the Bruce Wayne/Batman role may have been premature.

A while back came the news Keaton was in talks to reprise his role from the two Tim Burton-directed “Batman” films for the upcoming “The Flash” film which will shortly begin production in the UK.

That film will involve a multiverse-traversing storyline and will see Keaton’s version of Batman appearing opposite Ben Affleck’s Batman. Keaton however, asked by Deadline this week as to whether he’s in the film, says he isn’t sure at this time:

“No, you know what it is? I am needing a minute to think about it because I’m so fortunate and blessed, I got so much going on now. I’m really into work right now. I don’t know why, but I am, and so, yeah, I mean, you know, to tell you the truth, somewhere on my iPad is an iteration of the whole ‘Flash’ thing that I haven’t had time yet.

I called them and said, ‘I have to be honest with you. I can’t look at anything right now. I’m so deep into this thing I’m doing. Also, I’m prepping a thing I’m producing and getting ready to do down the road in the fall that I’ll be in, and I feel responsible to that.’ So, yeah, there is that.

I’m not being cute or coy. If I talked about it, I’ll be just bulls–tting you. I don’t really know. I have to look at the last draft. To be honest with you, you know what worries me more than anything about all this stuff?…It’s Covid. I’m more concerned. I keep my eye more on the Covid situation in the UK than anything. That will determine everything.

That’s why I’m living outside the city here on 17 acres, staying away from everybody, because the Covid thing has got me really concerned. So, that’s my first thing about all projects. I look at it and go, is this thing going to kill me, literally? And you know, if it doesn’t, then we talk.”

Filming on “The Flash” is scheduled to begin April 26th at Leavesden Studios in the UK ahead of a release in November next year.

Livingston Replaces Crudup In “The Flash”

Ron Livingston (“Office Space,” “The Conjuring,” “Boardwalk Empire”) has been cast as Henry Allen, father of Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen, in “The Flash” film at Warner Bros. Pictures.

Livingston replaces Billy Crudup, who recently had to exit the role because of scheduling conflicts with the Apple TV+ drama “The Morning Show”.

Crudup played Henry in 2017’s “Justice League” film but was barely in the theatrical cut. Zack Snyder’s recent recut gave him more screen time, but the role was still limited to two scenes.

Ian Loh is also joining the cast as young Barry Allen, while “Derry Girls” actress Saoirse-Monica Jackson and internet personality Rudy Mancuso also have roles. They join the previously cast Maribel Verdu as Barry’s mother Nora Allen, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Sasha Calle as Supergirl, Ben Affleck as Batman and Michael Keaton as another dimension’s Batman.

Production on the new film had been postponed due to the pandemic and is expected to begin shortly ahead of a November 2022 release. Andy Muschietti helms from a script by Christina Hodson.

I kind of chuckle seeing Viola Davis and Sylvester Stallone in the credits of the same superhero/supervillain together.

In a way, both Guardians' wacky tone and humongous creative/box office success and Suicide Squad's tonally confused first film - should guarantee Gunn at least a giant first weekend boxoffice with the promotion having his fingerprints all over it, if people are willing to come the theatres by then.

Keaton Confirmed For “The Flash” Film

After comments by the man himself that seemed to put things in doubt, it’s now confirmed that Michael Keaton will indeed be returning as Batman/Bruce Wayne for the upcoming “The Flash” film at Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films.

Keaton’s return was put into doubt in an interview due to concerns over travel during a global pandemic, and that he hadn’t read a current draft of the script. His agency has now confirmed to The Wrap he will be in the film which just began shooting in London.

Christina Hodson (“Birds of Prey”) pens the film which will adapt the iconic ‘Flashpoint’ storyline and see the Scarlet Speedster travel back in time in an effort to prevent his mother’s murder – only to inadvertently splinter the future into a new timeline with Keaton’s Batman protecting it.

The new film also stars Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, Maribel Verdu as Nora Allen, Sasha Calle as Supergirl, and Ben Affleck reprising his incarnation of Batman.

Andy Muschietti helms the film which has a current planned release date for November 4th 2022. Check out the just-released official logo art below.

Keaton might be the best reason to see this.... the screenwriter has a mixed track record.... but unless Keaton has a MAJOR role, basically this will compete with tv's "Crisis on Infinite Earths" and Avengers:Endgame.... that being the case, they'd better bring back Christian Bale and Brandon ROuth if they want to stand a chance!

The 'good' thing is that I got a good 'fix' with the tv Crisis-- it wasn't near "Endgame", but considering how extreme the resources that were available for "Endgame" and what was available for "Crisis"- I'm way impressed that they did as much as they did. Who would have thought they would have gotten Burt Ward & the actresses who were in Birds of Prey as well? So, that miniseries REALLY earned a lot of goodwill with the fanboy part of me.

So- the question is: Will Flashpoint be as appealing even with Keaton? I'm trying to lower my expectations, but Flashpoint really will be compared to both the tv Crisis and Endgame to some degree.... hope they come close!

I think The Flash will deliver as far as surprises and cameos but as a film and a full viewing experience? I’m not sure. The DC films are so hit and miss. Even the best ones of the last ten years often feel like they’re lacking something and not quite as good as the could be.

I appreciated Crisis just for thinking outside of the box and trying something that mind bending especially on tv. It was ambitious. Didn’t always work and could have been better but I respected the effort. With Flash it feels like what that movie is doing is pretty old hat after DOFP, Endgame, and COIE. Marvels already doing similar things with Spider-Man NWH and Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.

Not bad. Hard to fully judge it since it’s a candid behind the scenes type of photo but it’s not bad at all. I think I preferred the design of the first movies costume but the muscle suit looks so much better this time out.





Looks like it’s inspired by a few alternate supergirl costumes including the Injustice one. Makes me wonder just which version of Supergirl this is. Is it the classic one just drawing from other incarnations or is there something more going on?

I know these are behind the scenes, but the new costume for Supergirl doesn't look very flattering, but then again- I felt the same for Brandon in the press photos but thought it looked fine in the movie, so... (shrug)

I wish I could generate more excitement for Flashpoint. Having Keaton in there is cool and all, but.... get ROuth and Bale and I'll be more excited.
Speaking of which, really suprised Bale agreed to be in Thor 4 - which HAS to be a comedy of sorts. If he's willing to do that, it would be cool to see him in Flashpoint, but I have a feeling he really liked the Nolan trilogy and wants to leave it alone. (I'd love it if Nolan wanted to do a "Nolan cut" of the Dark Knight Rises where he got to kill off Batman as originally intended, but I doubt it would ever happen...)

I think the big reason Bale decided to do Thor 4 was to work with Taika Waititi. He’s developed a reputation for being more than a blockbuster director but a creator who does diverse types of films of a certain quality. Waititi has a unique creative voice. That and the challenge of doing this type of film probably appealed to the professional and the artist in Bale. Plus he’s seen how successful the MCU has been. Doing this gets him the clout to do other things (smaller more artistic projects) he wants to do if it’s a huge success.

As for the supergirl costume I like it a lot. I like the overall look with the short dark hair. Its striking IMO. It’s not the traditional supergirl but it does look like several of the alternate versions. I think it’ll look better in other scenes since she’s not wearing the cape here and also has a flying harness on. The only problem I have is some of the texture on the suit especially the midsection. Don’t know what’s going on in the abs section. I never liked the line pattern on the legs of the MOS suit and I don’t like it here either.

I LOVE those new costumes- and great picture! The only 'odd' thing is how it doesn't really convey just how tall Zach Levi is, but no matter...

On the flip side- I'm a bit wary on the sequel's story. I'm not sure there was more story to tell, but I hope I'm wrong.
