He's a fanboy but he strikes me as the type who liked the pictures over the words and probably preferred comics for "xtreme" action and stuff like that.
As for Manganiello he seems likes good dude. Hard to believe this is the same guy who played Flash Thompson in Spider-man 2002. Rumor is he was this close to being Superman in MOS but couldn't do it because of True Blood

That would have been interesting- hard to picture exactly, but could have worked...

Actually I can see why Snyder might have wanted him. Especially when you look at 300 and see his idea of the idealized action hero. Manganiello isn't in that Reeve vein of classically handsome old Hollywood matinee idol good looks the way Newton, Christopher, Routh, and Cavill were. He'd have been more of a rugged macho Superman. Similar to what Snyder wanted in Jason Momoa as Aquaman but more clean cut.

Similar to what Snyder wanted in Jason Momoa as Aquaman but more clean cut. It's hard to figure out what one would suggest for Snyder: With Michael Bay, he openly says he's a commercial director on (most of) his films. Hard to fight someone saying they're only doing it for the money, if they say that out loud anyways. With Snyder, he is ambitious and seemingly can have his pick of moderately priced projects- but his choices in them seem to fight against the very story he says he's trying to make. Is he Ed Wood? From afar, opinion-wise do we give him credit for ambition and intention like Ed Wood - despite execution? Or does it not matter?* (* To answer my own question, ultimately, since I'm not in the biz, NONE of it really matters- but as a hobbyist, it's fun to engage in thoughts over artists of course whose work we enjoy or see grow or regress)

He's not Ed Wood. Snyder can at least make a competent looking professional film. Tommy Wiseau is more of a modern day Ed Wood. Woods movies go into that so bad they're good territory. I don't think Snyders made anything like that but his bad movies can be admired for other things. Hard to compare Snyder to anyone. Like you said Bay is fully aware of the kind of movies he makes. He can make something of quality but he also openly makes dumb cash grab movies too.
I kind of want to put Snyder in the same vein as Paul WS Anderson. They're part of the same generation and make good looking films but they are not always very good or engaging. Difference is I think at one point Anderson could have been a good director but just gave up when it came to his story telling and just phones it in. I really do think Snyder thinks he's making deep and profound films and just doesn't get it. Snyder is Bayesque when it comes to the look of some of his films.

Again, it's hard not to admire at least the intention of trying to make something great, even if they don't quite succeed. And- I do admit sometimes one probably needs a certain amount of ego and self-deception to have their vision survive in that biz. I don't even fault Mark Millar for his chest-pounding in that jungle (as long as no one is really hurting anyone).

Millars just a shameless self promoter that doesn't surprise me.
If Snyder had a good writer to work with and a strong producer to reign him in and keep him on track he could make some really good films. It's when he starts calling all the shots that things go into the toilet.

I do think Snyder and Goyer have their strong points, but need collaborators who can complement them well enough to end up with stronger results... or strong producers who can draw the line on certain things.

Exactly. A lot of creative types need that. Dan Akroyd needs that. Some would say Tim Burton needs that. Film is so collaborative and sometimes it's collaboration that yields the best results.
Collaboration gave us Empire Strikes Back.
One guy unchecked gave us The Phantom Menace.

(Though since that point, the word is he got 'yes men' as editors past that time).

It's true. Sometimes you need another pair of eyes or another opinion. I'm not totally against studios stepping in but they need to know when the right time is to do that. If they'd pick the right people and settle on a direction before beginning they wouldn't need to step in as much.
The studio stepping in may have saved World War Z. For all we know it may have saved Rogue One. It's hard to blame them when they give a director freedom and he delivers a dud.

Hard to know without seeing the director's rough cut to compare with the final result. For film study, it's too bad that more studios don't release more rough cuts as a bonus disc.

It's not much but if it's any indication Wan is trying to make this film look a little dirtier than Snyders desaturated stylized would or anything else else we've seen in this universe so far

About on par with most DCEU films first official photos. They're usually low key and don't give much away. That's how the first photo from mos was.
I think there's a lot more Wan has left to show us. I do think this gives an idea of what he's going to do though.

I wasn't impressed by the SR official photo, but loved much of the movie- I hated the original Melissa Benoist official Supergirl photo, but thought/think she's great on the show--- But.... with photoshop available to jazz up/provide even concept art in the background, I just don't get why they don't try to be a bit more impressive with first'official photos' from studios in general. Don't get it....

It's pretty much the new fifty two costume ripped right from the comics. They’re definitely doing a tonal reset of their universe. It just looks so different from the jacked up dark padded rubber texturized Zack Snyder stuff. Hard to see how this will integrate with that. Glad it’s not that but doesn’t feel like they could all live in the same cinematic world. Can't tell if this is gonna be good or another green lantern style disaster. Reminds me a lot of green lantern.

I despise the 'hoodie dark redesign' in the comics, but the rest of the costume looks bright (no black leather thank goodness) and colorful= it does suggest that they're going with the 'light' tone of the original comics.
I thought this project was frozen. The cast seems promising. Glad that it didn't end up getting stuck in limbo. Hoping for the best...

I’m not a fan of the new 52 costume but i can see why they want to modernize it. I hate the hood too. I loved the golden age button up jacket costume and like what Tom Tyler wore in the serials. Never liked the top/tunic being tights like in the 70s tv show.
I guess this got fast tracked because everything fell together, they were ready to shoot, and they had to have something to release next year. I know they wanted to do black Adam first but with the rocks schedule who knows when he’d be ready. It’s better to do Captain Marvel Shazam first anyway.

Things at WB really do seem half-hazard. But, then again, I guess it’s better than development heck.... maybe. I just know Kevin Feige ‘s management and success at Marvel continue to shine

www.joblo.com/movie-news/ava-duvernay-closing-deal-to-helm-the-new-gods-for-warner-bros-488Well d@mn that came out of nowhere. I wonder if the monster success of Ryan Cooglers Black Panther has anything to do with this? She was talked to about directing black panther and I have to think WB would like her to world build with New Genesis and Apokalips the way Coogler did with Wakanda with a lot of game of thrones style tragedy, violence, epic battles, and royal drama. Doesn't seem like the time to be doing something like this. I get putting it into development but they should keep it secret. They should wait to see how Shazam and Aquaman do. WB just seems to be throwing sh!t at the wall to see what sticks. If this does happen they'll at least finally get to introduce Darksied after justice league dropped the ball.

Here’s hoping New Gods big budget LOOKS like Kirby come to life and makes up for the awful Inhumans tv adaptation. Ava sounds like a great choice but we’ll see. I think the billion dollar Panther success is driving this, which is fine by me. New Gods definitely has the potential to be the new Game of Thrones!
