They won't do that. 22 episodes have been ordered by the CW, so we're getting a full season. But, with the ratings being the way they are, and other CW shows failing miserably, don't put it past them to announce a 9th season around spring time.

Smallville's been good this season, it would be silly to cancel it when it's finally doing well. I disagree. "Smallville" missed the boat with this a couple of seasons ago. If it had transitioned into a "Metropolis" series with its current form then, that would be a different matter. But now in its EIGHTH season, its inconceivable to stretch things out any longer without Clark becoming Superman. A big part of why this season is working so well is the feeling of building towards Superman. Clark is now working at the DP, the romantic tension has developed between he and Lois, his heroics have started to get attention as a mystery hero, and he's realizing he's going to need a secret identity. Then there's the plot of Lex being missing, which is working fine for now, but can't go on forever. And the Davis/Doomsday stuff, which I see as working towards a final confrontation that will result in Clark finally becoming Superman. Give it another season, and the Lex and Doomsday plots get ruined, and all the build up for Clark himself gets postponed for no reason other than needless extending the series. It seems that they want another season, though, according to this: OG: Are Tom Welling and Allison Mack already signed on for a Season Nine?
BP: Allison is. And we are very hopeful for Tom.
OG: He'd be the one person that...
BP: Yeah, he's pretty pivotal. The other person I haven't mentioned is obviously Green Arrow and Justin (Hartley). We were sad that some of his other projects didn't work out, but we were so excited to have him. We've been wanting to have him as a season regular for a while. That's a really nice change this year.
OG: I liked him in Aquaman. I was really surprised that didn't become a show.
BP: Yeah, that was in that transition from WB to CW. There was a lot that happened. He was amazing in it, and he brings so much to the character of Green Arrow. He's a great character for us because he has such a different take on everything than Clark. So he can really push Clark in ways that I think a lot of the other characters can't.
OG: Is Aaron Ashmore also signed on for Season Nine?
BP: Yes, I believe so. I believe we have most of the cast. www.televisionwithoutpity.com/show/smallville/the_brian_behind_smallville.php?page=10And with the new approach, higher ratings, I think all points to this happening.

Yep, Kryptonsite has been saying a 9th season is in the works. As a fan, (yes, I love Smallville) it's time to kill the show. Just because it's gotten a bump in the ratings doesn't justify a 9th season. If there's a 9th season then they need to have Clark become Superman. And that will interfere with the pending Superman project. It just doesn't make sense. Now that Rubinov has killed "The Grayson's" a ninth season of Smallville seems inevitable. If you ask me, Rubinov wants to kill any future Superman film plans by dragging out Smallville for another season.

If you ask me, Rubinov wants to kill any future Superman film plans by dragging out Smallville for another season. If you ask me, WB should have cancelled Smallville at the end of the sixth season. There is waaay to much rivalry between some of the fans of SR and the fans of the show... sadly. I really think this has affected the movie somehow. "I wouldn't put it past him to actually do that." eh! yeah

Did anyone see Bloodline?
IT WAS THE BEST EPISODE OF THE SEASON! It was also the highest rated episode in one year.
The backstory for Doomsday is awesome.

I seen it. I thought it was awesome as well. This season is getting better and better.
I actually like where Doomsday came from, it's an interesting story. A lot better than what DC Comics came up with i think.
Chloe is having some great stuff this season.
And I cannot wait for the Legionare episode! read a summary about it and man, it's gonna be good!

The Smallvile version of Doomsday is WAY BETTER than its comic book counterpart. Geoff Johns even said it himself.
This is the best season of the entire series! I just wish they would have done this sooner! The next few episodes are going to be awesome. It is November sweeps after all.

There's a lot of hints about the costume and dual identities. I don't think we'll see him in full custom, maybe for the last episode, but not anytime soon.
Clark is embracing his destiny, finally. But the Doomsday story line is building up quite nicely.
Spoiler
He's the son of General Zod and wife Faora, well, an experiement more than a son.
Also, Chloe is infected by Brainiac and she's been doing some not so Chloe like things.
The Tess Mercer character (a mix of Ms. Tessmacher and Mercy), has worked out quite nicley, too. Although she does seem a bit forced at times.

Yeah Tess seems forced like you said legsy.. almost like she's a little uncomfortable.
spoiler... possible spoiler?
I wonder about her assembling the group of Meteor Freaks... I wonder what that's all about... If they are going to end up being the Legion of Doom or something like that. Last episode or so JLA vs LoD, Clark finally steps in to help the JLA and he's in costume or something like that lol. It's be fun lol.

"Bloodline" was good, but I felt it crammed in way too much and brushed over a lot of what happened. I wish they would have spaced it out over a couple of episodes, similar to what they've done in the past with mid-season breaks.
Clark gets the crystal back from an anonymous sender, but who? I was thinking the "X" from Tess' email was Lex, but know I can only assume it was Brainiac working through Chloe (unbeknownst to her). The Brainiac/Chloe issue looks like it comes to a head in the next episode, so we'll see.
Kara's return was well handled, as was her departure at episode's end. I was wondering how they'd write her out AGAIN, but putting her on a Superman Returns-esque search for Kandor was a clever out. And she doesn't even need a spaceship! The last scene between Welling and Vandervoort was pitch perfect. A shame we probably won't ever see them together again.
Lois goes with Clark to the Phantom Zone, gets possessed by Zod's wife, and runs into both Tess an Davis in her possessed form. The explanation Clark gives her is that she had a wild hallucination, and she believes it? And Tess never questions Lois further about what she was talking about, just gives her a raise? And what will Davis' reaction be next time he sees Lois?
Davis/Doomsday continues to come along nicely, though. Doomsday was always an out of control experiment and if he was going to have Kryptonian origins, connecting him to Zod seems reasonable enough, continuing the Jor-El/Zod rivalry from beyond the grave. Introducing the concept that he can never be killed the same way twice was great. Apparently Doomsday will be crashing Chloe's wedding, and I wonder what form he'll be in at that point.
I still say Seasons 1 and 5 are the best, but if things stay at this level Season 8 will be right up there with them!

That would have been great, but I think they actually did a pretty good job with the one episode 'hecko-goodbye'--- looking for Kandor is a good alternative if not sending her away to the Legion. About her tenure on Smallville: I was actually looking forward to it as a way for the series to open up Kal-el's connection to Krypton and ideas of family- but as soon as the second appearance happened with Supergirl/Kara (with her wanting to join a beauty pageant, of all things)- I thought it just got HORRIBLY botched and brain-dead in terms of her storyline. I don't mind if Smallville has 100 seasons- I think there are bits here and there that are great, but there are way too many bits that have been either repetitive or useless in the series (like Lana's overly long and boring relationship with Clark, and/or storylines and subplots that just keep going on, without real payoffs) that it's hard to fully embrace. Other fantasy/sf shows on television have been able to have similiar restrictions that Smallville seems to have, and yet, go much further creatively... (Star Trek: TNG & DS9, Angel)--- so, while Smallville may arguably be the best dramatic version of Superman on television yet... it still leaves this fan wishing for a little bit more... And, yet, again, I'm totally cool if it has 100 seasons- so long as it doesn't affect MOS!

Another solid episode, although I'm kinda iffy about Chloe and her memory thing. I dunno. I guess it could work. Probably the weakest episode of the season, but I'm looking forward for next week! Good: WE FINALLY GET TO SEE DOOMSDAY! ;D Bad: Kreuk returns for the next five episodes.

I really enjoyed this week's episode. Clark erasing Chloe's knowledge of his secret is suspect, but I don't think it will be permanent. Chloe is the female lead on the show, and her relationship with Clark is a key dynamic of the series. Not to mention that it's bound to leave leave gaps in her memory, unless Jor-El created some for her in their place. I'll also say this is exactly the kind of scenario people were saying needed to happen for Chloe to eventually become "Lois Lane." Clark's relationship with Jor-El was expertly redefined in this episode as well. Their previous misunderstandings have been tied up, and with calling Jor-El "Father," the dynamic between Superman and his biological father is properly established at last. And next week...DOOMSDAY! I'd recommend everyone watch next week as it will lead directly into the Legion episode after the hiatus.

Well at least Doomsday actually is looking like Doomsday. Pretty comic accurate. I cannot wait to see this!

When I dig out my DVD sets and watch a few episodes, it's like it's not even the same show.
I really miss Jonathan Kent. Talk about a grounded, realistic character, but I've read he's a real stand-up guy anyway.

It's not, and it's a good thing. You can only use certain characters for a period of time before if get repetitive, and the show did become just that. The recent cast change had to happen and the end result has been more than satisfying.
I agree with Kirok, I have a feeling Chloe will remember, kinda like Lois in Supes IV. She'll always know. But, I really wasn't too keen on her forgetting Clark's secret. We'll see how things go.
I am so looking forward to next week's episode.

Dude, don't bring Superman IV into here. That whole "I remember everything" line is pure garbage, through and through.

I'm very excited about next week's episode, but I must admit I'm surprised they're bringing in the full-on Doomsday so early. I thought for sure he'd be saved for the end of the season. And then there's Clark and Lois' sure to be almost-kiss. I seems like it's too soon, but with Lana gone (as far as Clark knows) and Chloe married, why not?
All this goes to show why this needs to be the last season. So much progress has been made it would just be going backwards to stretch things out for another year. Smallville is always its best when it thinks the end is near, but give them a long leash and they'll become repetitive and stale.
