So it's just another Superman comic, but with Tom Welling's face and Chloe appearances? It's going to have to do better than that. Even if they can incorporate elements like Bruce Wayne, so what? The appeal of seeing him in Smallville was that it was live-action. Now we'll just get a generic face.
I imagine it wasn't hard to get the rights to use the actors' likeness, considering most of them likely won't do anything of significance again. Unless they wind up on some other low-budget, genre show. Something on SyFy or in syndication.
Still, I'll check it out.

Announcing Smallville Season 11 Ah yes...the irony of him flying out of "Smallville" in the pic. They should title the book "Metropolis" or something. Where does their inspiration for the suit come from? I mean unless this is based on ideas they had for the suit on the show it seems hollow. And they have to get all the actors likenesses with a GOOD artist to bring them to life on the page otherwise this whole thing is pointless. If I were to open up the pages and see everybody with generic faces I'd toss this immediately. "Welling's" pose reminds me of this poster with Reeve's Superman only mirrored. The book could be good but it has to feel like the best parts of the show while at the same time not making the same mistakes as the show But its not like they have an excuse not to make this great. This medium doesn't have limits the way tv does.

In thinking on this for a bit.... realized there IS one way that this could be interesting--- if they actually had a SOLID destination for this beyond what the 'regular' comics could offer (I kind of doubt it) .... but since it's not a miniseries- the only value I think this series could have, would be one-off stories by writers of the show that one liked... but, other than that- I agree that it's kind of pointless other than to try to get an extra dollar out of any rabid Smallville fans who wouldn't otherwise buy a Superman comic.

Wasn't there already a Smallvillve comic? How long did that last? This new one offers something the old one didn't though.

So, why in the name of god would I be remotely interested in a Smallville comic that is actually a Superman: Year One comic, when...
a) I just read Geoff Johns/Gary Frank's lovely Superman: Secret Origin
and
b) I'm currently reading Grant Morrison's Action Comics, which is easily my favorite "Superman Year One" story since Byrne's Man of Steel.
Seriously. Why? What's gonna set this version apart? The moping? Will there be pages and pages of Clark being like, "I'm afraid I don't deserve to wear this suit." or "In my mind, I'm still The Blur, I'm not really Superman yet."
Fuck this noise.

Thats a good point. This has to offer something different than every other rookie Superman story. The whole hook of the show was the journey to becoming Superman. Now its no different than most of the Superman stories we see except they've already covered so many Superman milestones on the show--before he became Superman. There's not much of a hook there except milking the Smallville brand name a little bit more for people who are dying for more. I won't be buying this but it could be good. But I don't see much appeal. At least Angel was begging for a continuation with that up in the air cliffhanger ending. Smallville didn't end leaving people unsatisfied like that. It may have been disappointing but it seemed like everything got wrapped up that needed to be.

Very true...
In Angel's case--- (and Superman Returns) there were a lot of unresolved threads.... there was next to none in the Smallville finale.
If the writing were god-like throughout the entire run of 'Smallville' I could see people running in droves (well, a tad exaggeration, but...) to pick this up.
The ONLY thing that excites me about this book is the thin hope that if sales are through the roof, that DC is motivated enough to launch a comic book sequel to "Superman Returns"- with whatever scraps and ideas that Singer & company had for that.
As an aside: Was the John Byrne ALMOST comic book adaptation of Superman II to comics ever get discussed here?

Superman Returns needs a comic book continuation more than Smallville. heck I'd rather see the REEVE continuity continued in comic book form instead of Smallville.
If DC published their own "Superman V" so to speak that was based on the Salkinds production (The Cary Bates script?) I'd snap that up in a heartbeat. Or how about letting Tim Burton do his Batman 3 as a comic? We got Frank Millers Robocop so why not?
While we're at it lets see "The Flash Season 2: the comic." Any of these things have many more possibilities. Smallville still has a fresh fanbase of die hards who haven't moved on yet that DC hopes to capture. Thats why this book is happening.

Agreed... the Reeve continuity I was hoping for with the Richard Donner stories as well, but didn't happen. (It should have so been a standapart).
DC does do 'one-shots', so unless the movie contracts are more headaches than they're worth (I'd argue for also a Superman II proper adaptation straight from Mank's last version and whatever they REALLY were going to do for the ending), it's a giant mystery why they wouldn't try to do any of these possibilities....

One thing that I just found out: Gary Frank is apparently doing all the covers for the print version of "Smallville"... This link has a sample: www.tvguide.com/News/Smallville-Season11-Comic-1042919.aspxLove Gary Frank's art, but now and then, his facial expressions are just...odd. Particularly (imo) his version of Tom Welling in costume in that picture. More disturbing than uplifting.

So strange, since few artists around these days draw a better Superman than Gary Frank!
Even he knows the material is a turd.

Even he knows the material is a turd. Par for the course with almost anything Smallville related. Surprised Alex Ross hasn't tripped over himself to paint some Smallville covers with the love he used to give that show.

Okay, so I re-started Smallville in June 2011, watching the first season slowly through the latter half of the year, got busy, went nuts, then became unemployed around the start of 2012. So, I re-started again around February. I just started season 9.
While it's been somewhat exhausting to take in so much of any one show and little else (I was down to House and Supernatural this spring, plus wrestling, for my shows), it's a bit gratifying to go through so much all at once. Things become clearer. Stuff you may have forgotten about, plot points, etc., over the stretches of weeks or months during the show's seasonal hiatus periods ... well, they make more sense when watched with a bit more regularity.
Some things are still lame: too much Lana, a underwhelming fight with Doomsday, yet another verson of Zod (although a good one, but how much Zod do we need?), the black costume. But some things are surprisingly good: the emergence of Chloe as a major character, the guest spots for folks like Kara, Zatanna, Booster Gold, the Legion ... and the growth of Tom Welling.
Welling is not going to be known for much outside of Smallville, unless he walks away for a number of years and reinvents himself in his 40s. Outside of his version of Clark, which did experience more growth than we intially gave credit for, he can't act for shit. But, he had his one task, and he performed it well.
So, about 40 more episodes to go. About 40 more times to hear that theme song, which is getting on my fucking nerves after six months, and it'll all be over. Well, probably for about five years. Then I'll revisit it again. In the meanwhile, I'll revisit House since it ran its course earlier this year. One day, Supernatural may end, though I read the showrunners would like to pull a Smallville and go 10 seasons. Number 8 starts this October.

Can someone explain to me why Smallville had TWO Cat Grants? Two Jimmy Olsens. Two Lois Lanes. (if you follow the Chloe = Lois rumored original idea)

I can guess why they had two Jimmys (they wanted Jimmy at first then it didn't jive with their plans to line things up with the classic status quo or maybe they wanted to kill Jimmy but they knew that wouldn't be an easy sell to DC or the fans).
There's no way they planned that with Jimmy the whole time. It was too stupid. Even for Smallville.
I can't figure out WHY they felt the need to split Cat Grant into two different characters each one with some of her traits but both keeping the same name.

The problem with Smallville is that they did the whole "make it up as they went along" thing without a passing attempt at making it seem like it was all planned out - done with different degrees of success by Lost, Battlestar Galactica and Star Wars.
Writers came and went and storylines went by the wayside.
....ugh, those stupid caves. ;D
