Routh looks too scrawny in that cafe shot. I think someone should have lent him George Reeves' body padding! It's not that Routh was too scrawny, it's that he has less V-taper than Reeve. Reeve had wider shoulders and a smaller waist (and sucked in his stomach), making him appear bigger. Routh has a "boxy" physique. You can tell that the costume DOES have padded shoulders in the shots when he gets to his feet after Lex stabs him with the Kryptonite. This is right before he falls over the edge. You can tell because no human has shoulders that naturally look like that. The padding or whatever was there to help make him appear wider, but it wasn't enough obviously. Also, the belt was lower on Routh's waist, making his torso appear "longer" because you're seeing more of it, and it made his arms look smaller. As well as the smaller "S" shield showing more of the waist, again making it look bigger. Believe me, it's all in the way you present yourself to appear larger. Donner knew this, while Lester (and Singer) did not. The pics speak for themselves.

Hated the bad hair coloring job, remember getting distracted by the brown strands that peaked through on first viewing at different parts of the film. (But then again, it wasn't the worst thing about SIII...)

Reeve was a mountain in Superman III. Impossible to make him look scrawny in that one.
As for S4, Reeve looked extremely scrawny, when I think he was no less muscular than STM.

Extremely scrawny? That's not extremely scrawny Jim, lol This is: Reeve was not as big as he was but still a lot bigger than any other actor, plus he still had that thick neck that Brandon needed. Brandon looked like he could barely breathe in the suit

Brandon had the big neck, they just hid it all when they decided to give him that stupid high neckline that looked like it was choking him half the time.
I think that's my one major gripe about the costume, was that high neck line. I hate it.
If they would have opened the neck line, more of his muscles would come through in the neck and shoulder area. They should have used a different material for the costume as well, since it hid half of Rouths muscles. It would have looked a lot better.

Didn't Reeve say that his workouts for S4 was more cardio rather than weight lifting? Compare his arms and chest in S4 in that shot to S3. He ends up looking like a runner. Add to that, the movie was poorly shot and lit, so that didn't help.

Reeve had a hernia and wasn't able to lift the heavy weights again apparently. Other sources say the director purposely wanted him to have more of a "runner's" body
Still looked great though compared to the average Joe.
You can see Routh has a bit of a pencil neck in that pic posted above; those fake shoulders just too out of proportion IMO

Yes, those shoulder pads do no favors when he puts his hands on his hips like that. Almost Popeye-like.

my biggest gripe, aside from the colors was the super-speedo. it makes everything look like a scuba wetsuit.
it looks ridiculous and screws up the proportions.

I personally thought Routh looked fine. It was just the suit was restricting him in many ways as many have commented. Although not perfect, I still think the SR suit is still a damn good modern update of the Superman costume - it could've been much worse *cough* burton design *cough*.

I agree. I would have preferred that they stuck a little closer to the Reeve costume as well- but once the movie starts, I don't even notice it that much. As EvilSupes said, it could have been MUCH worse....

I now have a HD capable receiver now (well, my dad has) - which means I can now enjoy these HD audio tracks when this set is released. Should be cool seeing it all fresh with new picture and sound, plus my dad hasn't seen the movies since when I was 4 and used to watch them on VHS. Will be interesting to see his reaction to each movie *cough* Superman IV. ;D

If the theatrical of Superman 2 really does get the proper HD treatment, then this is gonna cost me a lot more than the price of the set, because I'll need to buy a blu-ray player as well lol.

Ah, well that's good to know. I think physical space for media has maybe 5 years left before everything is digital. Music was first, movies is next. Video games will be last.

I think physical media will be around a little longer than 5 years. Digital media is more convenient for portable devices and it will thrive the most there.

I dunno. If you can stream/dload movies straight to your blu-ray player, PC and Xbox I think 5 years is a bit much.
Places like HMV and Game will pretty much be outta business unless its hardware folk want.

If anyone's interested, Borders is having promo where you receive 50% off an item's retail price. You can get the Superman Blu-ray Anthology for $68, as opposed to $90.

It's 50% of the retail price. Not 50% off the $90 discounted price.
