Yeah, I think I'm gonna pass on blu-ray. I had been considering making the switch for a while now, but since it looks like Superman wasn't the only victim of the blue-orange "teal" look, I'd rather save my money and stick to watching my favorite movies the way I always watched them.
Warner Brothers did the same thing for "Blade Runner" final cut. One time cable had on both the director's cut on one channel, and the final cut on another channel at the same time. I went back and forth for a few minutes. they're like 2 completely different movies BASED ON COLOR, not editing/story.
James Cameron did the same thing to Aliens as well.

There is always going to be imperfections with releases. Always. If it's not poor pq it's the colour, if it's not the colour it's the sound.
Whatever the next format is, be it holodisc or whatever there will be problems.

Seeing the colors side by side really highlights that there are color issues. I am actually shocked at how murky the colors for superman 4. But, I am still happy to have the blu ray collection. The video quality is exceptional I think. The color problems are not enough to warrent watching the films on dvd.

As time passes, personally, I find it's hard to remember exactly how the colors were for the movies. When STM first came to vhs, I noticed right away frames cut from one of Superman's flights (its' towards the end when he does this 'swoop' down in prepping to outrace the water) & the missing end credits, but it seems to be the 'right' colors from the theatrical when I saw it. When it went to HBO for the first time, the frames were no longer missing & credits there, but I noticed a slight green tinge to Jor-el's 'ghost' when he appeared at the FOS, that I think was there when it was in the theaters that I don't recall on the original WB vhs tape. THAT was the first time I'd noticed/ was aware of how colors could change from film to video. I figure if there were changes in the image way back even then, I just don't know enough about film preservation and restoration to know what/if it's a question of money and laziness that prevents us from getting what was exactly in the theatres at first, or if there's just no 'pure' master that hasn't changed over time to give us 100% what was in the theatres way back when...

The colours look better in the US Blu Ray screen shots. They look more natural. Is there a reason that sometimes the colours aren't right or is it a Blu Ray thing?

If you hate teal with a passion, then stay far far away from the recent remaster of The Terminator. ;D Oh, I'm steering well clear of that release. I was incredibly disappointed to find that the remaster was unnecessarily tealed up. No doubt the remaster has improved clarity and detail over the previous blu-ray, but the tealing up of the image completely put me off purchasing the remastered blu-ray. Looks friggin' ugly. Yup. In my opinion, it was for the worse. One thing that really stuck out to me is Sharon Stone's original red lipstick is now pink/purplish in the remaster. You can see it the following comparison pic: caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleiche/comparison.php?cap1=12474&cap2=10604&art=full&image=10&cID=1166&action=1&lossless=#vergleichI think you mean Winfield. The reason for the colours not being right on the Terminator remaster and many other recent blu-ray releases is simply down to studios DELIBERATELY (and unnecessarily) changing the colours in an attempt to make them look "more modern" due to their ridiculous love of the teal-and-orange pallettes that permeates many recent films these days.

Sometimes the color is redone to honor the original color (Godfather) or is completely reimagined (Aliens, Fellowship of the Ring, et al).
The Matrix sequels got the green tint treatment at release while the original did not. But when it came to Blu-ray, The Matrix was given the green tint treatment so it would be "consistent."

Interesting...
As much as I enjoy SR, I would have been totally fine if they reimagined their color pallette for blu.....

Lol, 2 steps ahead of ya, Jimbo. When I first watched Terminator on standard dvd, I noticed just the sound quality alone is different. Know what I did? I went and re-bought the vhs, and recorded it onto dvd. As for The Matrix, I can't tell you how upset I was when someone told me that the first one was recolored to be consistent with the sequels.
Considering how I'm an 80's junkie anyway, I'd rather keep watching my movies the way I watched them growing up.....With the exception of one certain film I've talked about at great lengths on this site, of course lol.

I wonder if the Blu-ray for "O Brother Where Art Thou?" went from sepia to teal? Would completely fuck the intended visual style of that movie.

The mono track, sadly, is nowhere to be found on the new Terminator remaster. The sound effects in the 5.1 mix are comical. Arnie's laser-sighted pistol goes pew-pew-pew. Sure, the stock effects weren't great either, but they were more appropriate.

Lol, Arnie's pistol making the same sound as Dirty Harry's 44 magnum (the most powerful handgun in the world) is one of those "out of context" things I enjoy about the movie. It doesn't make sense, and I don't care, lol. The tv show Miami Vice is even better. Crockett's gun isn't a magnum either but it also makes that sound. And since he fires it wildly, it's almost like a machine gun lol. Since we're on the subject here, is anyone else stoked at the idea that, with Disney having bought Lucasfilm (and Lucas no longer in control), we might FINALLY get the THEATRICAL original trilogy in HD? ...or are we all afraid those will also get the "teal treatment" if it does? Also, anyone think at this point they should just change the name of the format from blu-ray, to "blue-teal"? lol

Embrace the teal My eyes adjust to it, and I can't detect the teal anymore. Just like with Fellowship of the Ring. In a dark room and with the absence of true whites, the off-green white looked pure white. For me, film grain and texture are everything. Contrast is also important, only to the extent it doesn't wash out surface details. Color timing? It has to be egregious to hinder my enjoyment, such as The Matrix's overload of green. I like blue, so I don't care. ;D

I'm hoping for that, too. I'd say be concerned. I just took a look at screenshots from some Disney/Buena Vista blu-ray releases of older titles and most of them have incorrect colour timing, along with pushes of teal-and-orange. Don't give 'em any ideas!

'' How about, 'The Superman Teal Ray Collection'?

How about, 'The Superman Teal Ray Collection'? Works for me. Another thing to add. If Hollywood feels that color movies should be re-colorized for blu-ray, how come all the old black and white movies weren't permanently made into color (meaning you can't buy the original b&w versions anymore)? Double standard.

An odd question...but anyone still holding onto the original STM dvd, since it's the only release with the awesome menu? I don't know why i keep it. But, it doesn't really take up any extra room, I keep it in a slip cd case in the dvd tin. I don't know why they didn't just keep the menu for future releases though.

I still have mine somewhere... I absolutely LOVE that main menu on the DVD.. I don't see why they couldn't have kept it or at least make something as cool as that was for the other releases.
The rest of the DVD menus are so bland and generic...
I still have yet to get the Blu Ray set......
