I've had a strange, possibly masochistic urge to revisit the Salkind Superboy television series. However, I find many of the episodes a bit...dull. So, I've come up with a plan.
I'm only going to watch "important" episodes. So, season premieres and finales, 2-parters, and anytime a comic book villain or character from Krypton appears. Also high on my list is a Gerard Christopher episode which features former Tarzan and Doc Savage, Ron Ely, as a future, silver-haired and retired Superman!
If anybody has any suggestions or favorite episodes, please post them here.

ok, so I watched both "first" episodes today.
The Jewel of Techacal (first one aired) Countdown to Nowhere (first episode shot, and chronologically first as it's when Superboy first appears)
Man, this show is bizarre. On the one hand, John Haymes Newton is pretty damn good. He's physically convincing as Clark and Superboy. His Clark is very much the post-Crisis, non-nerdy version. But unlike Dean Cain's likable Clark, Newton's is wooden, serious, and a bit of a dick. It's interesting.
Stacy Haiduk is an absolute babe as Lana Lang. She's just ridiculous. I look forward to the episodes that give her excuses to run around in a bathing suit. She's unbelievable.
But yeah, both of these actual episodes? Pretty terrible. I'm trying to put my finger on what the production values and acting are like in these earliest episodes, and then it hit me. Power Rangers. These are like Power Rangers episodes with a great Superman costume and no monsters.
The wire work is pretty good, but the green screen effects are hideous. I know it gets better a bit later in the season, and then better still in later ones.

@jor , I googled Superboy TV series, think they were on pirate bay.
Stacey Haiduk is a treat, the less she wears the better.
Strange this, there's a few episode where Ma and Pa Kent are in it and I swear the guy playing Pa looks a lot like Richard Donner. You'll know what I mean when you get to them,Val.
I like Newton, think he's pretty good. He looks the part, isn't much to his Kent though. Still enjoyable. The wire work is good, sure.

Ron Ely is in a two parter called The Road To heck. In order to enjoy this, you pretty much should watch the Two parter The Roads Not Taken. It uses the alternate dimension concept thats used in "heck". I love Standoff. My favorite.

Yeah, I've seen Roads Not Taken, and will definitely watch it again. Brilliant stuff. By that point the show definitely had come into its own and found a voice and direction. It's just these early episodes...ouch...

I tell ya. One thing about this show...it ain't ashamed of what it is. It's more of a Superman tv show than Smallville will EVER be. And they aren't shy about showing him in costume. You see about as much as Newton or Christopher in costume in one thirty minute episode of this as you saw of Routh in costume in SR.
For this, I will forgive pretty much all of the bad things.

Well said,I agree. It is a show about Superboy so,let's see him and they deliver on it.
Great suit as well. I can over look the rubbish parts of the series. It's cool seeing different change scenarios etc. Lana throwing Clark into the pool, then he flys out as Superboy, that was great. Also, going back as Sb and surfacing as CK. Brilliant!

It's crazy how BAD the first season is. Never liked the first guy, but thought physically the actor who came in the second season looked EXACTLY as Superboy looked in the comics (plus the stories were MUCH better at that point- probably no small reason being that two DC writers were also involved by season two). And.... yes, I don't think anyone will argue how beautiful Stacey Haiduk is as Lana. Good thing, otherwise season 1 would be totally worthless.

I loved the Bizarro episodes for some reason. How is the picture quality on these DVD sets?

I was actually an extra in a Season 3 episode, "Werewolf", in the resturant scene. You can see my dad pretty well and the back of my head. I LOVED this show growing up, so being able to be an extra and meet Gerard Christopher and Stacy Haiduk was a dream come true. I was seven years old at the time and it's still among the best experiences of my life. Gerard wiped the floor with JHN in my opinion. The writing gets better in Season 2 but really improves in Seasons 3 and 4. Meeting Stacy was amazing, even at 7, I had a huge crush on her. Gerard was the man, very nice and accommodating. He even called me by name several times. So much more to say as I know this series like the back of my hand. It's such a shame that Seasons 2-4 were never released on DVD. Luckily, the whole series is up on Pirate Bay for download. Val, if you check out the Werewolf episode, let me know and I'll let you know the scene I'm in.

KR, very cool! I'll add it to the list of ones I'm gonna watch!
Yeah, I was always much happier with GC than JNH. Even as a little kid, I was able to tell the huge jump in quality from Season 1 to Season 2.

Alright, I'm laid up with a fever this weekend, so I've been watching some more of these.
Today I watched...
The Fixer. I only watched this one because it deals with college basketball and it's March Madness, so it seemed appropriate. It deals with Lex fixing college games. It's actually better than it sounds, mostly due to Newton's performance and some GREAT wire work.
The Alien Syndrome. I TOTALLY remember watching this one when I was a kid. Great episode, with plenty of action.
Kryptonite Kills. Deals with (what else) the discovery of Kryptonite (in Addis Abbaba, no less!). Another Lex episode. Again, not bad.
So, I'm revising my opinion of a few things.
1) Newton is TERRIFIC, especially as Superboy. He looks great. He's not a tall dude (but then, neither was Gerard), but he's got a great build. He looks confident and comfortable in the suit. He gets a bad rap, but really, he's damn good.
2) The guy playing Lex is TERRIBLE. Just, hilariously awful. And his little manservant/flunky/lover Leo is even worse. Painful to watch.
3) Stacy Haiduk gets sexier the more you look at her. Lose her dated 80s hairstyle, and she is just a ridiculous beauty. Her body is completely distracting, no matter how they try to hide it in baggy clothing. I daresay, she may very well be the hottest babe in ANY incarnation of the Superman mythos.
More to come. I've got nothing else to do, I feel like shit, and this stuff is like comfort food.

Alright, I think I'm done for the night. BUT, I did watch...
Revenge Of The Alien pts 1 and 2. The sequel to "Alien Syndrome". Not bad. we get our first look at Jonathan Kent, who DOES look an awful lot like Richard Donner!
Meet Mr. Mxyzptlk. I was hoping for better here. Michael J Pollard is pretty much born to play this part, and he looks like he barely remembers his lines. But, we do get Haiduk in a bathing suit, so....
Anyway, I think I've been too hard on this show. Episode for episode, it's at least as enjoyable as Smallville, even though it's a much more juvenile show. But I'll take a live-action cartoon like this over endless navel gazing.
Newton > Welling.

Am glad you picked up that Pa Kent looks a lot like Richard Donner, haha excellent.
Good points, well put. The show is cheese but it's good! I really enjoyed the first season it's great fun. Smallville is just a rewrite of this.
Luthor is just awful, corny over the top-just bollocks!

The Luthor from Season 2 onward (Sherman Howard) is MUCH better than Scott Wells. In fact, Howard is quite possibly my all-time favorite Lex.

I remember liking Howard much more, but he was always a bit more psychotic than I like my Luthors. Still, looking forward to moving on to Season 2.
