Totally agree w/you, Val. Wonder if the C&D is a good sign at all that WB is prepping something in terms of a release?

As far as I'm concerned if they aren't going to release the rest of Superboy cracking down is ridiculous. There's a small demand out there and if people want to see it how else are the going to do it besides finding it online. If WB don't want people pirating it then make it available somehow.
Its a classic case of the "if we can't make money off it no one else will either!" mentality. But they could make a little money off it if they want. Just offer it the way Captain America (1990) was offered on DVD or something.
I need to track down the Ruby Spears Superman show.

It's not that hard to find. I bought it after watching an episode with Val. It's GI Joe with Superman, basically!

Just watched the series finale two-parter, "Rites of Passage" I gotta say...wow. For something with no big baddie, and is actually played pretty light (Superboy loses his powers, needs to find a crystal, all while Lana and his boss are snooping around Smallville investigating the rocket landing 21 years earlier), this is a BRILLIANT piece of Superman television. They do the whole thing without pulling a "and now, you shall be called SuperMAN" on it. Cute ending, too. Really amusing. I referred to this in another thread, I love how he still poses as Superman without his powers and he just uses his smarts to foil the scenario. As you say, it's a brilliant bit of Super-TV.

Much like Superman IV never say never when it comes to this kind of stuff. These are the seasons a lot of fans were really waiting for. As far as my collection goes they are already bought.

Great news! I've got some poor-quality versions of these, but I'm looking forward to owning the real ones. Well done!
In other news, I watched "A Kind of Princess" from Season 1 yesterday, which guest stars Playboy playmate Julie McCullough as Clark's love-interest. YOWZA!

That's very cool if they are planning to release them.... if there's movement behind the scenes on this, (long since considered a dead subject), wonder if SII re-edit/extended isn't too far behind? With the first season's sales dead, it's a little amazing if they are- but hopefully someone at WB realized that the series took a giant step up with the second season on....

I know I sound like a broken record on this subject. But....
To WB, the Donner cut is THE ONE AND ONLY re-edit, end of story IMO. Is another edit anything other than fanboys like us wishing, and voicing our discontent with their attempt to appease the hard core fans (the only ones being vocal or who even cared about the donner footage in the first place)?
If SII gets an another official re-edit endorsed and sold by WB (in the next 20 years, gotta leave room for some kind of crazy outcome) I will personally rob my local bank. But, I don't have to worry about that at all, because it's never going to happen.
They might, give us the rest of the RIC scenes in HD in a deleted scenes section of some SII re-release. But a full edit, or even a proper release of the RIC is a fool's dream.
Good news about Superboy though, I'll be picking these up as well.

;D "original elements destroyed" code: we don't give a shit. just saw an article at comicbookmovie and had to comeover here! ;D i'm glad to see it. for WBDC this is just mining the archive for ancillary revenue, but hey, why shouldn't they make the $$ if the market is there? maybe 2013 will be the next "year of superman" ;D

There is another update from Capedwonder's Facebook page about this: CapedWonder.com CAPEDWONDER™.COM REVEALS EXCITING SUPERBOY TV SERIES NEWS! Yesterday evening I spoke with one of my Warner Bros. contacts about Gerard Christopher’s Superboy TV series seasons 2-4. There was a belief for many years that the series' original film elements had been destroyed, however, that is apparently not the case. Today I am pleased to report that one of Warner Bros.' vice presidents (who is a very energetic and passionate Superman/boy fan) has confirmed that the film elements are actually sitting in the Warner Bros. vaults. He is apparently well aware of the huge fan base that is eager to see these remaining three seasons released on video, and is pushing hard to get them released as soon as possible. Like you, he wants to see the project get done and done right. This is not an official announcement of the series' release. The intention today is to inform you of the film elements' existence and that a senior level executive at Warner Bros. is putting the wheels in motion to get the series released. Please keep in mind that there are no guarantees in the movie business, so we'll have to remain patient and keep our fingers crossed that Gerard Christopher's Superboy will fly again soon. Stay tuned! www.capedwonder.com/wp-content/uploads/GC-Superboy-shirt-rip-1.jpg

I never watched this show while it was on television. At least I don't remember watching it. Being born in '87, I was just too young at the time. And since it disappeared once it was cancelled there really wasn't any way to see it again.
A few years ago at a comic convention I picked up a bootleg of a few Gerard Christopher episodes. And eh...they were pretty rough. I did appreciate the straight-up depiction of Bizarro though, much better than what "Smallville" ended up giving us. But outside of that and the fact that he actually wears the Superman costume, "Smallville" wipes the floor with "Superboy" as far as I can tell. Of course I've still never seen any of the series outside that handful of bootleg episodes, but what I saw didn't inspire me to do so either.
I know the first season is out on DVD, but I'd always heard it was the worst. Then last week John Haymes Newton was on the Superman Homepage's podcast and it was a very interesting interview. He was very honest about his experiences on the show and gave the real story on why he was recast. So if for nothing else than him seeming like a cool guy and I enjoying his interview I think I'm going to pick up the DVDs next time I see them. And with the Gerard Christopher seasons seemingly on the way, and me being the compeltist I am, I might as well pick those up too.
That said, I still have the first season and only the first season of "Lois & Clark"...

Apparently there were a couple of incidents where mistakes were made with the wirework and he legitimately could have been killed. Because of the dangerous nature of the special effects, he was to get a raise for the next season. The problem was, no one wanted to front the money for Newton's pay increase. The Salkinds wanted the studio to pay for it, the studio wanted the Salkinds to pay for it. So Newton was holding out and refused to return to work until it was settled.
During all this, Newton had been part of some kind of situation (not a DUI) on private property and had written one of those "strongly worded letters" to the local police department about it. According to him the media blew it out of proportion and took it out of context, making it look like he bribed the police to get out of a ticket. Newton admits that he handled the whole situation poorly, but it was all the studio and the Salkinds needed to use against him and not give him his promsied raise.
He still continued to hold out, even though they told him they'd recast. He didn't think they would...and he was wrong. In retrospect he says he was was young and stupid and that he probably should have given in and returned to the show.

Given how even NOW there are commentaries talking about how much wirework screws up actor's backs permanently and how there are still mistakes with wirework-
It's a little hard for me to get too upset when actors resist wirework and have to be replaced by CGI, no matter what they get paid, when I put myself in their shoes.
On the flip side, STM's wirework with Reeve will always stand out even more over time, I think, because of the practical work. I'm REALLY amazed by three shots in particular:
* Young Clark racing against the train with wires- and in FRONT of the train(?)
* Supes flying upwards from the sidewalk in a giant longshot for the helicopter rescue
* The final 'prisonyard' shot, where it's clearly Reeve, as he's hoisted from the ground, over the prison wall.... with no air mattresses or anything below him, in case of any mishap.
While on the subject of fx...
Even though I loved most of SR, I do want another fx house to be handling MOS.... With the budget and all the advances that keep happening with fx technology, I really want to be 'wowed' fx wise that I haven't been in a long time.
Hopefully, just as the newest Spiderman movie's fx were giant improvements over the last ones, hopefully it'll be the same in MOS' case...

Cam, great points about wire work. A year or two ago, when I got together with Kev, Being, and Costa to hit some Metropolis locations, we ended up over by where Supes drops the burglar off to officer Mooney.
We were stunned at the height that Reeve had been lowered from and then took of to, with nothing underneath him but NYC pavement.

In retrospect he says he was was young and stupid and that he probably should have given in and returned to the show. Funny how history repeats itself with these kinds of shows. The stuntwork is dangerous. If true Newtons situation sounds like a combination of what George Reeves went through on TAOS and what Jackson Bostwick went through on Shazam! The wires broke on Reeves and he could have been hurt badly and I think he got pretty pissed over it. Bostwick got hurt doing a landing stunt and when he went to a doctor to get treated the producers fired him for taking time off and claimed he wanted more money. Maybe Newton should have sued? Bostwick sued for wrongful termination and won. I always thought of Superboy as a kind of spiritual successor to TAOS AND Shazam. All three were half hour shows aimed at a younger audience. It'd be nice if WB tried that formula out again. The big difference with Superboy and Shazam though is that at least Newton was replaced by a decent choice. John Davey suffered the laughable condition of "great thickness about the midsection." ;D He looked terrible. Bostwick was a stiff actor but he was built like a superhero.
