Kris if you mean Superman leaving the city at the end he knew that fight was pointless. It was too much and all that was happening was destruction and people getting hurt. He knew Zod would come to him because he wanted revenge on Jor-El more than anything. Much more so than Shannon's Zod. Zods ego, which Superman himself saw up close, wouldn't allow it to be any ofher way. If he did hurt people he'd probably want Superman to see it in person. He wanted him alive to serve him and be his slave if he could.
Superman's mistake was leaving earth without a protector and not paying attention while Zod took over. He was so wrapped up in his own wants that he blocked everything out.

But... the thing that affects going to the movies more, from the posts here (which we almost all seem in agreement of), is that the movie going behavior of the crowds has gotten to a point that THAT ruins the box office more likely than what critics say/ think.
Anyhow, I know it has, for me.
Even with the availability of movies on dvd/web, there used to be something special about going to the theatres to just be there to experience the film with strangers. Now? It's like being trapped in a room of people who may or may not distract you at any second and probably will while watching. (Not that bad audience members didn't exist before in history, but now, it seems far too commonplace at any show, and people have worse toys that distract during a show).

Nice observation, Metallo. I agree with that. Different Zod in S2, which puts a whole different complexion on the supposed "abandonment" issue that arises from Superman flying off to the FOS. I found it particularly effective the way Zod and company IMMEDIATELY stop blowing, the second they see that Superman has "fled." All they want is to BREAK HIM and brand him a "coward." Mission accomplished.
As for Jimbo's relaxed, fairly apathetic response to MOS, I have great respect for the way his mind works. His advice and the way he approaches things has always been quite level-headed, which is why I believe that if his jets have cooled, after reading reviews and seeing trailers, it's because he's truly convinced that he's seen and heard enough to make an informed intelligent decision, as to whether or not MOS is a film worth getting excited over. While I wouldn't say this about everybody, I believe he's a guy who's capable of making such a judgement, even without seeing the movie, first.
Having been out of the loop for while, is it true that Mav has decided not to see the film at all? I seem to recall reading something to that effect. If that IS true, is there any post or thread where Mav goes into some detail, as to what brought him to make that decision? I'm really curious to know more.
BTW, thanks CAM, for your comments about MY comments. I'm glad that what I had to say didn't come across as narrow-minded or unfair, with respect to MOS or the future of Superman films.

Who got hurt in SII?
A marlboro truck, a couple of cars toppled. A guy got hurt by ice cream, another guy got hurt going backwards on roller skates, i think some guy might have bruised his shoulder falling in a telephone box.

@ veris-
I'm not speaking for anyone, or trying to put words in peoples mouths- but Jim is, I think, a FiLM-BUFF, an aficianado FIRST. Then a superman fan per superman the movie. And he does have a cool headedness most of us lack. As for others, it comes down to preffering a version or another. Ie: I am personally a superman obsessed nutter. But my adoration for superman (which was cemented by STM) actually makes me kind of picky and snobby (and sometimes inconsistant) about superman media. Some fans of superman will enjoy, to a degree anything superman related because its superman. Others, myself incl, Are finicky. While I am preoccupied with superman I gave up on smallville after season 3. I am embarassed by lois and clark. I just don't care for those iterations. Of course this is sort of fickle as I am aware that there are episodes of either show that have better narrative quality and characterisation than superman 4- but I'm easier on S4 because I'm biased for reeve! Lol.
So, some fellas aren't going to be keen on every bit of media even if it pertains to a favorite character and some fellas are looking through a prism of film critique. I look at it from a "content of material" more than a clinical look at film craft.
So I end up loving "man of steel" because its giving me things I have always craved, while skipping things that don't do it for me. Others of course are looking for (or looking at) different elements and can be very at-ease and casual about it, others just don't have any interest.
2 years ago my expectations for "man of steel" were very bleak- but my wife said "there's always going to be a 'next version' of superman". And its true. This one isn't for everybody but maybe the next one will have a different appeal.
(All of the above is for what its worth)

I really looked forward to seeing SR a second time!
No, I didn't bother to see it. I was in town, did what I had to do, got to the cinema 15 mins early and just decided I could not be bothered. More interested to come home and continue re-reading "Casino Royale"
edit, to make it worse, I won a tenner of the lottery last night effectively paying for the ticket. Spent the money on a book instead

That makes more sense- but I was always a bit thrown when I finally got a copy of the Mank script and saw how different it would have turned out under Donner--- in that version of the battle- the bus hits Superman, no blowing of the cars, but Ursa moves the bus away, and there's a TUNNEL (callback to STM where Superman makes a tunnel underground) and Zod and company can't locate him with xray vision. Zod and company then fly in the air and threaten the bystanders.
So, there's no 'climax' to that scene- but more of a cliffhanger. (And I miss that written bit of Zod and company just hanging in the sky threatening the population).
You're very welcome- Glad to see you again on the board!

Being deaf I don't hear to many people talking to interrupt my enjoyment of the movie. Find a Regal theater. Many if not all of them now have closed-captioning glasses that you can wear - they're called assistive listening devices and an online lookup of the theater will usually tell you if they are provided. I've tried them. They are a bit heavy but you get used to them - and more importantly you can now follow the story just like everyone else. I used to only pick up maybe 10% of the dialogue, now it's more like 95%... on par with the mainstream.

I have come to the sad conclusion that MoS is just too boring for me to sit through a 3rd viewing.
Yes, you read that right. It's a boring movie. I predict that more and more of us will admit that is the case, once the dust settles.
Some brilliant bits, but I can't sit through that whole thing again.

Just didn't have the money to invest in my idea.. crap, I could have made a lot of money off of that. I'll have to check it out.. hopefully there's one in Michigan somewhere. Thanks for the info Chris!

Cassie wants to see MoS for the 3rd time now, but in 3D since we have yet to see a movie in 3D. She's never gone back to a movie more than 2 times which was The Avengers last year. So she really likes this movie. So this week sometime I think we are going to see it in 3D. Can't wait.

i saw "superman returns" at least 6 or 7 times. the 10 pm thursday, following saturday matinee, coupel times myself, the IMAX--4-scenes-in-3D, and a very peculiar screening in a museum in cleveland that has a domed screen. its weird. a domed screen made for specially filmed documentaries. SR was NOT filmed for this format- and if 3D gives you a headache...
i have a shot at 2 more times this week. and when we get to the end of the run i might cram a couple to tide me over for bluray.
sure as sh*t wish there is an extended cut.

The interview with Snyder's wife said there was none intended at the time.....but I do wonder if Snyder is affected at all by internet reaction and might reconsider one. Despite mixed feelings, I think I've always said that I'd want to see the 3 hour cut, too....

I've done 5 already and that's a personal record of any movie for me. But I'm done. I'll wait till the blu-ray and if I really want to see it, I'll download a cam version of it.

To each their own. I can't wait to own it and watch it often. Let's try to keep the whole, "Well, I didn't like it, so everyone MUST feel the same way..." schtick to a minimum, yeah?

There's a couple of bits I wouldn't mind skipping over, but the same goes for STM.
I'm looking forward to being able to watch it on my own TV.

Aye, a movie that's beginning to end perfect pretty much doesn't exist. I tuned out a few times during my most recent viewing, but overall, I just love this movie. It honestly doesn't make sense that a lot of you just don't care for it, but eh, happened with Superman Returns, too. Seems like some of you should just stick to STM and SII. No more new Superman movies for you.
