Kevin Conroy To Play Batman In Live-Action

Kevin Conroy, the man who has voiced the character of Batman in many of his animated iterations, is finally getting to play the character in live-action.

Conroy will appear as an old version of Bruce Wayne (basically his “Batman Beyond” character) in “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” this year’s iteration of The CW’s annual crossover event of its various DC Comics-inspired series like “The Flash,” “Arrow,” “Supergirl” and “Legends of Tomorrow”.

The news was announced today during a panel at the Television Critic Association’s summer event where it was also confirmed characters from “Black Lightning” will also appear in the five-episode event for the first time. This year’s run will air in December and January.

Conroy joins a growing impressive list of former DC superhero actors returning with “Legends of Tomorrow” regular Brandon Routh set to also step back into the role of Clark Kent which he first did in “Superman Returns,” while original 1960s Robin actor Burt Ward will also appear.

Conroy voiced Batman/Bruce Wayne in “Batman: The Animated Series,” “Batman Beyond” and the “Justice League” series and some of the animated films along with the “Batman: Arkham” video game series.

Wow. People have said they wanted it for years. Never thought I’d actually see it in an official thing yet here we are. It’s actually a brilliant workaround since Conroy is too old to play Bruce in his prime now. They really are going all out on this d@mn thing aren’t they? And black lightning is part of it too! About time.

Guess this was the only way they could get around using “Batman” at all. Wonder if his old Bruce will borrow from Kingdom Come, Dark Knight Returns, and Batman Beyond?

I think some of them will be pretty substantial depending on story needs. Others will probably be pretty short. Actor availability will also play a factor.

TOM WELLING TO REPRISE HIS SMALLVILLE ROLE FOR ARROWVERSE CROSSOVER EVENT

Look up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! No ... it's Tom Welling, and he'll be reprising his SMALLVILLE role as Clark Kent for the CW's upcoming DC Arrowverse crossover, "Crisis on Infinite Earths!"

News of Welling joining the CW's latest major television superhero extravaganza comes not long after it was announced that Man of Steel actors Tyler Hoechlin and Brandon Routh would also be appearing as a part of the Arrowverse's next major show-spanning event. As you might recall, talk of several Superman actors making the scene for the CW's "Crisis" began over the summer, at which point Welling, Hoechlin and Routh were all named as wishlist players for the upcoming superhero spectacle.

According to reports, Hoechlin and Routh were easy gets, on account of them already starring as integral members of the CW superhero brand - Routh plays Ray Palmer/The Atom for DC'S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW while Hoechlin often stars as Superman on the Melissa Benoist-led SUPERGIRL. However, Welling proved to be more of a challenge, with some saying that he was reluctant to return to the character. Be that as it may, we now have confirmation that all the wrinkles of the deal have been ironed out, and he'll be reprising his role as Clark Kent for the crossover. Additionally, the event is also expected to explore what happened to his character almost a decade after the events of SMALLVILLE - a detail that fans of the show are undoubtedly looking forward to discovering.

“For eight years, Arrow has stood on the shoulders of Smallville. Simply put, there would be no Arrow, and no Arrowverse, without it,” said ARROW co-creator/executive producer Marc Guggenheim about Welling joining the fray. “So when we first started talking about Crisis on Infinite Earths, our first, second and third priorities were getting Tom to reprise his iconic role as Clark Kent. To say that we’re thrilled would be a Superman-sized understatement.”

For the moment, there is no indication that Welling will be suiting up as Superman for the crossover. This being the case, Arrowverse fans still have plenty to look forward to when the epic five-episode event spans five of the CW's most beloved superhero shows - ARROW, THE FLASH, SUPERGIRL, DC'S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW and BATWOMAN. The "Crisis on Infinite Earths" event will be divided up into two parts with three episodes airing in December while the remaining two will arrive in January.

Well the rumors have swirled for a while now it looks like it’s official. The way they teased Smallvile so hard with the last crossover it’s obvious they wanted to make this happen. Could we see all the Supermen together on screen? It’s too good a moment to pass up. Here hoping Welling acually wears the suit this time. If he doesn’t it’s still exciting that he’s a part of this but seeing him as Superman would really put this over the top.

ERICA DURANCE TO REPRISE HER LOIS LANE ROLE FOR THE CW'S CRISIS CROSSOVER

After announcing yesterday that Tom Welling will be joining the CW's upcoming "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover event to reprise his role as Clark Kent of SMALLVILLE fame, word has come down the wire that Erica Durance, who played Lois Lane for the beloved Superman series, is also boarding the network's big superhero spectacle.

So far, Durance is the only actress expected to return as Lane for the multi-show-spanning event. With Welling and Durance both on board, a focus of "Crisis on Infinite Earths" will revolve around what became of both Kent and Lane after SMALLVILLE came to an end after its tenth season in May of 2011.

Recently, ARROW co-creator/executive producer Marc Guggenheim said that his Oliver Queen-led superhero show owes much to SMALLVILLE, which in many ways helped lay the foundation for the CW's current run of comic book adventures. “For eight years, Arrow has stood on the shoulders of Smallville. Simply put, there would be no Arrow, and no Arrowverse, without it,” Guggenheim remarked.

With Welling and Durance joining the rest of the CW superheroes for Crisis, I have one burning question: How long until it's announced that Michael Rosenbaum will be reprising his role as Lex Luthor for the crossover? For real, I think that would make for some very nice icing on an already delicious cake, don't you?

The CW's "Crisis on Infinite Earths" event will consist of five episodes featuring characters from many of the network's superhero pantheon, including ARROW, SUPERGIRL, THE FLASH, DC'S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW and BATWOMAN. The biggest comic book-related television event this side of the Multiverse will be divided into two parts, with three episodes airing in December while the remaining two are set to arrive in January. Hold onto your butts, my friends. This sounds like it's going to be quite epic!

“Birds of Prey” Huntress Returns For “Crisis”

The CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths event series continues to fill up on cameos by cast members from previous DC Comics TV series adaptations.

Today comes word via TV Line that Ashley Scott has signed on to reprise her role as Huntress/Helena Kyle from the short-lived 2002 “Birds of Prey” live-action series which aired on The CW’s predecessor The WB. Jessica De Gouw has played the Arrow-verse’s version of Huntress but she’s not expected to be involved.

Scott will join her old castmate Rachel Skarsten who played Dinah Redmond/Black Canary in the original series and now has a series regular role on “Batwoman” as Alice.

That’s not all though as Deadline is reporting that the one and only Lynda Carter may also return as Wonder Woman.

Carter has appeared in the Arrowverse as President Olivia Marsdin in multiple episodes of “Supergirl” but the trade suggests she may slip back into her old iconic role from the 1970s.

They join an ever-increasing roster including at least three versions of Superman/Clark Kent (Brandon Routh, Tyler Hoechlin and Tom Welling), two versions of Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch, Erica Durance), Jon Cryer as Lex Luthor, Johnathon Schaech as Jonah Hex along with former animated Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy, former Flash actor John Wesley Shipp, former Robin Burt Ward, and possibly former Joker/Trickster Mark Hamill.

Durance has posted a photo of herself today reuniting with Welling which you can see below. The five-part ‘Crisis’ event airs across December and January.

Man they really are going all out for this damm thing. Never thought I’d see the 03 BOP show revisited but it’s timely with the movie coming. I figured the characters would be off limits but since it’s Helena Kyle/Wayne and not Helena Bertinelli maybe there was a loophole. Wonder if WB will let them use the name? Using Bruce Waynes daughter fits since in comics the Earth 2 Huntress was Helena Wayne. I hope they get Dina Meyer back as Barbara Gordon too.

Sounds like Berlanti is fighting hard to get Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman as well. I hope they can make a deal. C’mon DC don’t get in the way with the usual corporate fiefdom bullish!t.

This is so awesome to see. I got a bad feeling we're not going to see Welling in costume.... STILL--- but, Erica Durance hasn't aged much at all! Great to see this, though.
This is one of those things that a fanboy grows up dreaming up & imagining, but never can see happen.

There's a giant chunk of the Berliantiverse that drives me nuts, but these kind of events more than make up for it!

I imagine it's probably self-concious body issues that maybe Welling never wanted to talk about. If it's lasted for ten years, that may still ring true. If we saw an early promo still for Routh but not Welling--- I also be surprised if it shows up at this point.... but at least seeing all the Superman actors in the same frame acknowledging each other will still be cool.

Nah I don’t think it’s a body issue like him being self conscious with how his body looks in something form fitting. It’s something specifically about wearing a Superman suit. He just didn’t want to. Wether that was because he didn’t think he should have for story/character arc reasons or because he thinks the suit is goofy (and that he’d look goofy in it) who knows.

He’s openly said he’d love to play Batman and he’d be in a form fitting comic booky padded textured suit there too. Only difference is Batman wears a mask and the darker colors. I just think he thinks the Batman suit is more cool so he doesn’t have a problem with that one. There was also the issue of being willing to guest star on The Flash but not Supergirl. It’s something about Superman that’s the problem.

If he does wear the Superman costume in COIE I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re trying to hide that for as long as possible—maybe until the show airs—to give fans a real surprise. Given that the fans supported the show that gave him the Smallville career... and him HAVING to be aware of how meaningful it would be for Smallville fans, that would be a nice 'giving back' to all the fans who were (including me) disappointed in not seeing THAT moment at the end of the series. It always struck me as a little selfish, given what he got from the show and fans.

It is also a pity that Rosenbaum didn't join.... but given the straight talk about what the producers offered to him... hard to blame him for not participating.

I kinda agree. I think he should have bitten the bullet and worn the suit for that final shot. True he worked hard and really gave up his life for ten years with those crazy hours but it’s not like he wasn’t eventually handsomely rewarded financially speaking. By the time he was a producer I’m sure he was making great money by tv standards. Not “FRIENDS” money but I’m sure he did well.

As for Rosenbaum I’m not calling him a liar but I just wonder if he didn’t want to do it no matter the circumstances. His Social media explanation did seem to be composed to elicit the greatest amount of sympathy possible to not look like the bad guy in this. Maybe he priced himself out with a high asking fee. He’s said long before now he had no interest in playing the Lex Luthor character again on tv. Who knows what “no money” means without any context. “No money” for him could have been acceptable for someone else. Maybe he had higher expectations. Maybe he was expecting the same thing he earned on Smallville or the same thing the regular cast members of the CW DC shows earn. This is all pure speculation on my part. If he didn’t want to do it he didn’t want to do it. He’s got every right to turn it down if he doesn’t want to do it.

What's annoying is an actor who owes his retirement money indirectly from the fans not wanting to uphold a creative tradition of wearing the symbolic costume the character is known for.

George Reeves wore it.
Christopher Reeve wore it.
Dean Cain wore it.
Brandon wore it...

I guess if someone REALLY has an issue wearing it, then, I'd rather that person not wear it... but....I feel worse for fan friends who stuck it out on Smallville for THAT moment at the end that never happened. (I guess Gotham did it better?)
It's not like the fans are asking him to do something to dishonor his family or something--- so, it is irritating... but, there's more irritating things and bigger things in life, so...meh.

You make good points on Rosenbaum.... It is hard to know all the real details with offers with actors and producers.

To this day, I know there's a 'he said/she said' between J. Michael Stracinski & the actress on Babylon 5... so, anyhow- I do have to say that I'm mostly glad we get Routh back as Supes, having Welling & Durance back as their Smallville characters is also an unexpected cool bonus. So, I can't be too greedy.... but I don't understand how they could be shooting NOW and still be 'in talks' with other actors for parts for the miniseries.

The angle and the wide-angle lens is pretty awkward- doesn't seem to flatter Hoechlin or Welling here....

I mean...yeah it would have been nice to get “everyone” back and do it as a twelve episode miniseries or two movies like Endgame but this is still more than I EVER expected to see. This is the kind of stuff I used to dream about as a kid but never thought it was possible. We all know how tv works. Once a show is over you usually don’t see the actors all back years later especially if the show wasn’t a big hit.

Welling AND Routh...together as Superman? Who knew that would happen back in 2006 when everyone was arguing which one was better? Shipp back as Barry AND in the suit? For me hearing THAT flash theme was as cool as hearing the Williams Superman theme in theaters again in 2006. Kevin Conroy playing Bruce Wayne in the flesh? It’s all a little mind blowing as a long time fan. This kind of stuff just wasn’t done on superhero tv before. We were lucky to get costumed bad guys and now we get this? Who ever thought the old birds of prey tv show would be revisited? I bet they have a lot more surprises in store too.

Possible hopeful theory:
WB/DC is giving extra resources to do a 'beta test' on interest of a Superman Routh tv series, rather than Hoechlin.... hence, closing up ROuth's part in Legends to give him time to prep for a potential tv show? (Hope but probably not)

I don’t think so but maybe the mostly positive reception this is getting won’t go unnoticed by WB and they decided to do something later. This is a total pipe dream that would never happen but I wouldn’t mind if a dc rebirth style situation happened and DCEU history was altered by this and Routh Superman was thrown into the the movies to replace Cavill Superman. In the comics New 52 Superman was killed and Post Crisis Superman took over for him. Then their histories were merged. Do a streamlined simplified version of that with Routh. Convoluted I know but I’d love to see Routh get another shot on the big screen.
