Well, you gotta admire Hursty's tenacity I wouldn't call it tenacity. It's a little more like wearing dark glasses at night... it might feel cool but you can't see much of the world. It a shame that Mr. H won't get to see any more Superman movies. SR isn't a Chris Reeve Superman movie and that's not really what it was trying to be (if anything it was a Donner * Mank Tribute more than anything). I think that Chris Reeve wasn't Superman's deffinative moment for many of us. He added a great deal to the legacy and added a great deal to the credibility of a fantasy genre... as did all involved on STM (supporting cast and Donner's crew sold the movie but it was Chris Reeve's hand shake that got the metophoric deal). My Superman vision is parts of most incarnations of the character (Fliescher cartoons, john Byrne's 80's re-boot comics, The CR movies, Lois & Clark, Miller's Dark Knight Returns Graphic Novel, George Reeves' show, S:TAS and Justice league, and even Superman Returns !) I'm not a fan of the idea that CR is the only guy who could do it right. He did it well ! So did the others. IMHO.

Looking forward to your thoughts on it, Hurst! I'm not. He already hates it; it'll be the most narrow-mined " review" you can imagine.

I dunno...there have been plenty of narrow minded reviews of SR. I can imagine quite a bit.
Seriously, maybe he'll surprise us.
I'm the first to admit that SR is seriously flawed, but I'll say that just about any time Routh is on screen, the movie is fine.

Well I've never understood Hursty's mentality on the subject. Fair enough to not want to watch a film because you might not like it but to actually hate someone's performance when you haven't seen it in the context it was intended is madness.
For what it's worth it's not a great film. Nor is it a bad film.
But Routh isn't the problem. He's actually incredibly good in it. I say incredible because in mind he has to live up to Reeve. Is he better than Reeve. No. Is he as good? No. Is he close? Yes. His superman is near perfect. His Kent comes a bit across like an inferior impersonation of Reeve's but more than passable.
Any problems with the film are script and production. It's actually Routh that holds it together. But despite the films flaws it still has some moments to make it worth watching.
What I'm trying to say is when I saw Routh as Supeman I didn't see somebody TRYING to be Superman or trying to be like Reeve's Superman.
I saw Superman.

Do you REALLY beleive that.
Even if I grudgingly like Routh, he will never ever ever be the definite Supes.

But like you've just said he'll never (or maybe he will as there is more to come) be the definitive Supes but he came pretty damn close. Maybe he IS better and my mind is clouded by the memory of Reeve but then if my memory of Reeve is clouding my judgement I wouldn't have said Routh came close. Give it a shot. It can't be worse than watching Three Men and a Little Lady and if you do hate it then you can always hammer your testicles with an Anvil to see what's worse.

Hurst, just to give you some perspective on my feelings on Routh.
Reeve was my first exposure to Superman. I was 3. I was obsessed with his portrayal. I got into comic books BECAUSE of seeing Reeve as Superman. I saw STM before I saw any Superman cartoons or comics or ANYTHING.
Now, 28 years later, I'm intimately familiar with all incarnations of Superman. All the live action, all the cartoons, I have every episode of the radio show on MP3, I probably have 1000 Superman comics, not to mention Justice League, etc.
Is Reeve my favorite Superman? Yeah, pretty much. And not just for the nostalgia factor.
But, I think Routh does a more than capable job. In fact, of all the guys to do Superman in live action, I only think 3 guys have really gotten it right. Reeve, Reeves, and Routh.

Can see what you are both saying, but when I joined these forums back in 2000 it was due to my obsession with the Reeve films and not the character of Superman. I have always been a Reeve fan first and a Superman fan second and that's a fact that dates back all of my life.
But I've said I'll give it a shot and I won't go back on it.
Luke - the testicle thing, never an anvil, but I did use a chisel once, and it was still more enjoyable than Little Lady.

Hurst, I'm going to have to come clean and some Superman fans will probably have my head over this.
I'm not a fan of the comics.
There I've said it. The only comics I bought as an adult were the Death of Supes issues. Which I actually enjoyed. I even bought the Funeral issues. Which I thought were dreadful. Susequently I bought the Return issues. Which was a bit slow going but not bad in the end.
And I'm a comic fan.
I've not even read Byrnes run (I have a UK reprint of the first issue). Or Moores (and I'm a Moore fan). I had some comics when I was young when the film came out but I don't remember them. I also had that Nick O'Teen promo thing against Smoking.
My only window into the world of Superman is Reeve. And it is that window I look through when seeing anything Superman related.

Also I saw for definate Supes 2 and 3 on release at the Cinema. I'm not sure if I saw 1 at the cinema though. If I did I don't think it was on release but may have been re-release. I think it may have been on TV but can't be sure.

Hursty, give Routh a chance. Regardless of what you think of the film, I think you will see that he is the best torch recipient possible.
