Action #10...another great one! Stuff is starting to get interesting. It's nice to see they're keeping the "t-shirt" look for his earthbound stuff for now, but he wears the armor when he meets with the League!

It's worth noting that Rags Morales is one of the artists who makes the "armor" look alright. It's decent when Jurgens draws it, too. Basically, I don't hate it as long as it doesn't look too bulky and armor-like. Down the line, if they do something about the stupid red belt and the overly detailed bits, I think I'll ultimately be ok with the redesign.

COMICS: Can Scott Lobdell Save SUPERMAN? DC Comics' Superman title is on its 4th writer since the relaunch and the series number have been less than ideal for such an iconic character. Has DC finally found their man in Lobdell? Mark Julian - 6/12/2012 Looking at the sales numbers for DC Comics' big three or Trinity, it's pretty evident that Batman (and his offshoot titles) is the main draw of DC's readership. In fact, over the last four months Batman from Scott Snyder has sold more than the combined totals of both Superman and Wonder Woman. It may seem like a self-explanatory observation with the current success of all-things Batman related abut there was a time when Superman was king of the comic world. Thirty years ago Supes was still sitting on the comic book throne but by the mid 80's he was struggling to crack the top 10 as the X-Men titles from Marvel were absolutely dominating the sales chart. The resurgence brought by the wholesale reboot of the DC Universe last September spiked Big Blue's numbers but that appears to be on a downward trend. Perhaps the answer to this phenomenon lies in the very story told in DC's latest direct-to-video entry "Superman vs. The Elite." A story that seeks to answer is their a place for the small town morals Superman in today's harsher, grayer urban society. Those that have seen the film or are familiar with the original comic run know that it took Superman giving the world a "wake-up call" to remind them of his importance. After George PĂ©rez, Keith Giffen and Dan Jurgens have all been given a crack at revitalizing the Man of Steel, DC now turns to Scott Lobdell to remind readers of that importance.
HuffPo So, are you guys [Lobdell + artist Kenneth Rocafort] on this title for the long haul?
Scott Lobdell: Well the last time I was on a flagship title I stayed on for about five years! So trust me when I say that I am totally committed to writing Superman for at least twice as long.
HuffPo: So you have long-term plans for the book?
SL: I don't work that way. Just like I could not have imagined a year ago that I'd be writing the world's most famous super hero... I like the stories of the characters to mirror the same sense spontaneity and unpredictability that define us in "real life".
Yes, I turned in a 25 page pitch for the series that examined every aspect of Superman, his friends, his enemies and over a dozen story ideas... but I've found over the years that the series often takes on a life of its own once the characters and the conflicts and the interactions start to show up on the page.
Just imagine how boring it would be if you sat down and told me exactly how your life was going to play out every month for the next 12 months -- who you were going to meet, what you were going to say, how they were going to act, what super powers you were going to use to defeat them? Then imagine the likelihood that your life would play out exactly the way you predicted it would over the course of the next twelve months.
HuffPo: Will you be carrying on the continuity, or pulling a new New 52 and tweaking things slightly?
SL: "Pulling a new New 52!? I love your questions, Bryan!
Let me say that there will be tweaking aplenty -- but I think it is going to be in terms of tone and attitude and not in history or continuity. We have no plans to reveal Lois is Superman's daughter from an alternate future or that Perry White is actually an amnesic Jonathon Kent who has been in witness protection.
But yes, you'll see from the very first issue -- in fact, even in the Annual and the Zero issue before it -- a Superman that is going to feel very of the moment.
HuffPo: What is your favorite thing about the Superman character and how do you guys hope to bring that to book?
SL: I like the sheer uniqueness of Superman. The fact he is stuck on a planet of six billion people -- who he is the self-appointed champion of those people -- but that he will never be one of them? How awesome is that? If it were me I would probably take a deep breath and fly into space and find a planet where people were more like me (could you imagine what that would look like) -- maybe a planet that wasn't so reliant on what I did every day. But not Kal El. He's there day-in and day-out putting his life on the line for a people that alternately put him on a pedestal or steer clear of the most famous alien on Earth.
Again, there are over six billion people on the planet, and only one Superman.
(And when you consider that the other two "supers" are a girl who thinks you've gone totally native and a clone of you who was created to be the world's greatest living weapon -- he has more in common with the rest of us than he does with his own 'family'.)
That said, too often Superman is seen by readers as "too perfect" -- that he always makes the right choice. But the truth is, every choice has consequences and when all the choices you make are super choices you have super consequences.
The very first issue is going to see the results of several choices which are going to have ramifications for months to come!

Well, I'll give it a couple of issues. It can't be any worse than the Perez run was.

The red belt is just plain stupid and ugly. Too bad they can't use yellow anymore.

The Earth 2 suit drawn by Nicola Scott is 10x better. Plus she draws the S like MOS

yeah, the earth 2 suit is considerably better. it blends the old earth 2 with a bit of that "flyby" concept art.

The new Earth-2 costume is miles better than the "regular" costume. And yeah, that's DEFINITELY the MoS "S" on there. I love it. I want a shirt with that "S" like, yesterday.

maybe we'll get lucky, and earth 2 superman is still alive- and the new52 superman dies and the older, mature serious better-costumed superman takes his place.

TERRIFIC annotations of the new Action Comics #1... www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=39326Nearly a year out from the DC relaunch, and I can safely put the first issue of Action in my list of favorite Superman single issues of all time. The rest of the arc didn't QUITE deliver, as I felt it was a little "everything and the kitchen sink" plus the inconsistent art, but overall I'm sold on this version of the character. But this first issue was exceptionally strong.

Superman's been quite enjoyable under Giffen/Jurgens. I'm suspicious of Lobdell, but I'm willing to give him a shot. I do like that since their hands are kinda tied with villains, as DC clearly has given Morrison the mandate to do all the important myth-building, that Superman is just a book about Superman vs. high-powered alien menaces right now. It ain't exactly art, but it's fun slam-bang action.

OK, so I've picked back up on Superman and Action. It's actually a good thing I'm a few months behind, as I can buy the digials for cheap on Comixology.
I'm only three issues into each title (buying one per week to catch up), and Action is by far the better of the two.

Yeah. No contest. I'm probably dropping Superman soon, but Action will stay. It's getting really interesting now.

Yeah, I'm going to get Supeman up through issue 12 and maybe 0, then I'm dropping it. The quality just isn't there.
And while I am finding Action Comics interesting. It's getting to be a little too "Morrisonany" for me.

Well it looks like Morrison is officially off the title after issue 16. www.ign.com/articles/2012/07/23/grant-morrison-leaving-action-comicsCan't really say I'll miss him, though his run has been interesting. Hopefully they get someone decent on the title. And get Rags off the title. His work is so inconsistent and spotty. It's been just about a year, and I've given it a pretty fair shot. But, it's official...Byrne-Triangle years is MY superman. Everyone has their's and that era is mine. I might drop the supes titles for awhile and focus on reading/re-reading this era again.

I'm really bummed he's leaving. I thought the first two or three issues of Action were perfect, and then it got a little kitchen-sink for me. But then the "Superman of Earth-23" issue ranks as one of my favorite single issues of Superman EVER, and so far, I like the new storyline.
I was REALLY hoping that Morrison would stick around for a few years and do what he's done on the Batman titles, and just craft this insane epic for Superman.
Depending on who replaces him, that could be it for me and the Superman books. It needs to be a-list. Johns, Busiek, Waid...somebody of that caliber.

Okay, some great art in Superman No. 6, but what the fuck am I reading? None of this makes any sense to me! Did I need to read some other story first? I thought it was a reboot?
Action 6 was pretty good, but I had to go back and re-read the previous one to remember why Superman was already in his Kryptonian leisure suit in Action.

The Superman title has been generally inferior, but that first arc is REALLY terrible. Just poorly written and dull.
