Routh just posted this on Instagram. This pic looks less manipulated to me. They’re definitely going for that Alex Ross Superman look and physique. It takes a few bits from the Superman Returns costume but improves on all the design problems (neckline, Shield size and placement, colors) a lot of people had with that suit. I’d argue it’s the best tv Superman suit in nearly 30 years and maybe the best live action Superman suit we’ve had in the 21st century. I definitely prefer it to Hoechlin and Cavill’s costumes even with that Kingdom Come S. Routh was one of the more underrated Supermen and this just makes me want to see him back in the role in an more substantial Superman project. It looks great- THANK GOD (Zod) that there's no awful clasps on the Cape & looks more along the lines of Reeve/Donner Superman! Now, it's all about the scenes he's in. I HOPE that it is indirectly going to wrapup the Superman Returns' storyline. And hopefully they don't go overboard on aging makeup! I always figured they’d do something different from Hoechlin’s suit. For one thing he’s from a different universe and a different design aesthetic would really highlight that. They’d also want the three Supermen to have their own distinct looks and identities especially if they have scenes together. They also probably want to show Routh as an older more traditional Superman. Its similar to the way they let Shipps Flash costume keep those unique elements that made it clear that he’s been around longer than Gustins and is a very different Barry Allen from a different world. A “Heroes of a bygone age” kind of thing. I hope they acknowledge SR as part of his history. If they don’t I can only imagine it’s because of some inter company licensing issues. If that is a problem they may skirt around it by being just vague enough that you can believe he’s the SR Superman if you want to but they wont directly acknowledge it.

They seemed to do it with Sean Connery's character in "The Rock" (or at least enough imo)- Since this is most likely the 'last' appearance by Routh as Superman I'm hoping that they give him an entire episode.... but I'm trying to keep expectations low. With the classic Flash, they only gave him a few scenes. I have to expect probably the same, sadly. In an ideal world, they'd have the equivalent of "Endgame" where the Smallville series, the SR series, (even Lois & Clark would have been nice) would have have a 'big' goodbye/finish with this. If not, REALLY wasted opportunity.

I don’t think he’ll be a lead character on the level of the regular characters but they’ll give him some memorable stuff. It’s already been rumored that Rouths Superman will have a “nice moment” with one of the other Lois’s which may be a nod to what happened to Superman in Kingdom Come. DC did that in one of the comics a few years ago where KC Superman spends some time with present day Lois and it’s very emotional.
I don’t think this will be an exact adaptation of COIE. It’ll be something along the lines of X-men DOFP as far as adapting the story: the basic story but on a tv level. I think some Earths will be destroyed and others will be combined but who knows if it’ll go as far as the comic book story with that. It’s hard to imagine they’ll wipe out certain ones like the Smallville Earth. If it does maybe they’ll do the comics thing of Rouths Superman and any other survivors being rewarded by getting to live out their lives in a “paradise” dimension. I definitely think this CW version will surprise us with some curveballs.

I definitely think this CW version will surprise us with some curveballs. I was pleasantly surprised (and moved) when they had a moment like that with animated Spiderman movie with older Peter Parker & MJ.... I don't know if it would be as effective if Superman/Routh has a moment with a Lois that isn't 'his'.... though if it does happen, I'd prefer it be Durance-Lois out of the different Lois actresses. I also doubt it'll be that close to Crisis in the comics.... but hopefully it'll overall equal DOFP and ENDGAME (on a tv level). I do kind of wish that there was more accuracy to the rumors thrown out there on what to expect. Back and forth I hear about Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman being in it- which would be cool, but if it ends up only being Routh's Superman and Welling's Superman- from clamoring for it for years, I guess I should just be happy that there's even a scene with Routh as Supes. Will see...

Well remember the older Peter in Spiderverse had an emotional moment with an aunt may that wasn’t his (his May was dead by then) and had another moment when he looked at a photo of a Mary Jane that wasn’t his before he decided to try again with his MJ. It’s still an version of his loved ones the same way it’ll still be a version of Lois that reminds Rouths Superman of his Lois.
The same thing was done on the Superman TAS episode Brave New Metropolis when the Superman of an alternate earth confesses his feelings to Lois after his Lois was killed.

I found this article interesting.. www.slashfilm.com/crisis-on-infinite-earths-crossover/Especially this part: '“I feel like at this point, we’ve covered the waterfornt in terms of we’ve talked about every person who’s been in a DC property in live-action, and with Kevin [Conroy] in animation,” Guggenheim said. “Everything is possible. I happen to love the Supergirl movie and I remember the first time I saw it. I would love for her to reprise her role. We’re feeling out a lot of our various parameters in terms of what can we afford and what do we have story for? Can this be a cameo? Can this be a full on story? It’s just this ongoing conversation. we started the crossover earlier than we ever have precisely so we could have these conversation.”

They’ve wanted Slater. I wouldn’t be shocked if we see her as Kara again. McClure has said he’d love to do the Arrowverse shows too. Guggenheim is a die hard Reeve era fan so I wouldn’t be shocked if we see both of them.

I'm still thrilled that: (1) Above all, we get to see Routh back as Supes, something I clamored for--- well, forever. (2) That it's a GOOD costume. Possibly better than the SR costume, that I thought had the 's' too small. (3) We also apparently get to see Routh as Supes AND Clark.
Also glad that the 'buzz' is that the response is so good, that the higher ups supposedly are paying attention. Wouldn't it ironic/ awesome if Routh gets to do multiple Superman movies (or a great tv show) now, decades later?

Nice to see Routh in a suit with some breathing room along the neckline so it doesn't look like he's choking.

Agreed--- It seemed like there was so much 'non-response' to SR and Routh at the time the movie came out.... that I wonder if people eventually caught it on Netflix/whatnot over time and caught on to the quiet gem I feel it is.... especially after seeing the overly-noisy 'Man of Steel" and "BvS"--- and appreciate Routh and SR now in hindsight. I actually feel something like that for Keaton/Burton's Batman films now- that I really was a bit against when it first came out. Nice to see Time not just be there to make one feel old and decrepit, but improve some things over time!

Should have really noticed the first time but...
Are those little 's's on Routh's Kingdom Come costume like in SR?

Yep. The blue parts have little S’s for texture much like the red parts of the SR suit did. It’s a nice callback to SR his time on that. I feel the same way. He got a raw deal after SR and I always felt he took way too much heat for some fans for things that either weren’t true or weren’t his fault. Some of it was so petty that it was hard to even believe. I think not only did time make people appreciate Routh more but the response to BvS and MOS Did too.

I'm glad that he's said in a video interview that fans have (and do) come up to him at conventions to tell him how much SR meant to them.... so that he embraces it, rather than feel like it's a failure that he'd just as soon forget. That there's positive noise on his return can only help that good feeling. Though... I still scratch my head as to why he was let go in "Legends"..... I can only think of it being a financial thing where they need to cut costs & that Routh may have had the biggest paycheck... (though that hardly helps Brandon- but glad he seems so happy to reprise Supes on Legends).

It’s probably a combination of cost and not having anything for him to do. It’s been obvious for a while they have no idea what to do with Ray. He rarely has any interesting storylines. He’s just there. As an original cast member he’s also probably due for a raise or to renegotiate his contract pretty soon.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility of him returning as Superman on the big screen.
This new Terminator film ignores everything after T2, and brings back Linda Hamilton.
Maybe the same should be done with Superman. Ignore MoS and its crap sequels.

Hey I’d love to see it. It just depends on how well this is received and what their future plans are. If they’re going to reboot Superman the way Reeves is rebooting Batman then I doubt it’ll ever happen but then again with the massive success of Joker who knows? I could see a situation where WB allows two superman.
If people love Routh in the role in Crisis and certain people within WB push for it it’s possible. His return as superman has been far better received so far than anything I ever expected. Let Routh do a stand alone film and then reboot. I think everything is up in the air right now and all bets are off. Look at Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool. Played the role in a disaster of a film then got another chance years later. Like you said ATP I wouldn’t rule anything out.

I am intrigued by the idea of Lols being killed off & an older Superman afterwards--- this leaves the door WIDE open creatively if they want to go this direction in the movies. I always felt that the original Supes films got hamstrung- mostly by cutting off ties with Donner- but also by trying to stay 'frozen' as the comics did with Superman/Lois/Clark for so long, with Lois never knowing who Clark is/etc.--- That's part of why I was enthused when in SR they dared to move the timeline forward by having Supes have a kid. This would have forced things to evolve in the Superman movies, past the comics at the time. In any case... Once again, would love to be inside the walls of WB and know if the possibility of Routh returning is even being discussed there.

I feel the same way. I’ve always hated how some writers want these characters to stay stagnant and stuck in a state of arrested development forever. It limits storytelling and just reeks of wanting something safe, comforting, and familiar so it won’t rock sales. Spider-Man is the perfect example. His appeal was always that he was us and he went through the same rites of passage we did. But by the late 90s they wanted to role back all the changes the character had gone through.
I think most peoples big problem with Jason White was how the story played out not the idea. But some people didn’t like the idea no matter what. I never understood that. I’ve got no problem with the characters growing or changing as long as the core elements remain the same. It’s why I didn’t mind Tony Stark telling everyone he was iron man in the mcu or Lois knowing Clark was Superman from the beginning in the DCEU. I also didn’t mind aunt may finding out Peters identity or Mysterio outing his secret ID. I think now people have gotten used to the idea of Superman and Lois having children. It’s why the Superman and Lois tv shows premise of them having a baby isn’t getting the same pushback Superman Returns did.
Doing a show or movie where Superman is older and Lois is dead would be an interesting change in the status quo that would let them take cha character to places he hasn’t been before storyline wise. It’s different. It’s why Batman Beyond was so loved by some people.

It’s different. It’s why Batman Beyond was so loved by some people. That would be extremely fresh imo if SR did do the Batman Beyond route- with Routh! About stagnation in comics: There was a series of books years ago from the UK that talked with many of the Spiderman, Fantastic Four, and X-men writers on the challenges of being on those respective books- With Spiderman, the constant problem brought up was: "Spiderman works best in high school"- but since it is/was a soap opera, how do you retain the appeal of so many things that have to stay the same? But it's sort of the same problem with Superman. If you're used to Superman and Lois & it being a positive spirit- then to be a Superman comic, it seems like it is 'stuck' forever to stay the same. If I were asked what I would do with DC- I'd either publish 'alternate timelines' for Superman & so forth- which I guess is similar to what they did with the "Unlimited' line for Marvel. I guess in some ways DC is already doing that with Smallville season 11 comics or whatever- but maybe rather than rebooting all the time, officially putting a 'Superman- Earth 3' or whatever in the title, but I wonder if it's also a copyright thing that they'd be affecting? Not sure. About following that stagnation in the movies/tv: But- yeah.... with the movies, knowing how RARE it is to get all the stars aligned, I feel like if there are particular stories or situations that demand to be Brought to life from the comics, then they'd better include those properly---which means NOT changing certain thing> I thought Tony Stark revealing his identity in the first movie ruined some fun that could have been gotten in a movie or two if he also had to worry about that. With MOS with Lois knowing Clark's identity right away, I think it also ruined some great comic and story moments from happening, too--- but, fortunately, MOS had so many other problems it was a moot point. - I was thrilled when Nolan HELD BACK Joker for TDK rather than stuffing him In Batman Begins. On the other hand, stuffing Catwoman and Talia Al Ghul in TDKR was a disaster imo. I guess that's always the issue- what to change/ what to keep. It's just a pity that the 'hit' rate is relatively low. The MCU does it the best overall, but even then it should be higher...

That would be extremely fresh imo if SR did do the Batman Beyond route- with Routh! Yeah just explore a time period new really haven’t. It would put a whole fresh spin on everything. You brought up some interesting things so I’ll take them one by one. That’s a fallacy on the writers part. It might be EASIER to write Spider-Man in high school but some of the best stories of his existence have taken place after high school. High school keeps it simple and gives them parameters to operate in. You can explore some universal things everyone has dealt with by that point. The problem with grown men writing high school adventures today is things change so much so fast. Even the slang and lingo and social trends can change radically in a couple of years. 40 year old guys writing for teenage characters has come off as cringe worthy to me several times. Like you’ve said they’ve done the ultimates and a several other alternate continuity lines at Marvel and dc has too to a lesser extent but they can never resist the urge to apply this stuff to the main line once those side lines are successful. To me if you’re going to do away with updates to the characters just do a line wide reboot. I hate that too but it’s better than trying to cherry pick certain things from different eras the way the new 52 did. That’s why that reboot was a mess. Events that affected several chartered didn't line up. At least keep it consistent. Another option would be one book set in the past and another set in the present. Different time periods in the characters life. Problem there is it totally deflates the tension because you know certain characters will be fine in the future. Marvel and DC have tried it but it never lasts. I think in the modern era some of those conventions just don’t work or in some cases are just retreading old ground. It’s all about the execution. I never minded most of the changes in MOS but the execution was sloppy.
